While Hathaway and Gyllenhaal’s film received mixed reviews from critics, the film was a commercial success. It explored the story of a medicine peddler Jamie who falls for a young woman suffering from an illness that could eventually lead to Parkinson’s disease.

Anne Hathawaygave her best for the role of Maggie Murdock inLove & Other Drugs, even taking inspiration from the works ofKate WinsletandPenélope Cruz(via NPR). However, after the filming wrapped for theJake Gyllenhaalfilm, Hathaway worried that she was never going to work again. She expressed her concerns during an interview with Perri Nemiroff for Shockya.

She told the outlet that she read the script for the filmOne Dayafter a two-week panic followingLove & Other Drugs. She shared withShockya:
“I read the novel after I read the script, which was in December 2009. Let’s see; I wrapped Love and Other Drugs, I had a two week panic that I was never going to work again, and then I got sent One Day.”
When further asked about her concerns after the romantic comedy film,The Dark Knight Risesactress shared that she didn’t expect job security in the acting profession. She revealed thatshe was playing at a high levelat the time and feared that people would get bored of her. Some things were beyond her control and she thought that she could end up with no opportunities one day. TheLes Misérablesactress shared with Shockya:
“Worry comes with the territory of being an actor. You don’t come into this profession for the job security and there’s a lot of things at all times beyond your control. I’m playing at a pretty high level now and there’s a lot of things beyond your control. You can be doing fine work and people just decide they’re bored of you and then all of a sudden you don’t get the opportunity to do things.”
She also added that her worries made her appreciate the opportunities that she got. She assumed that the opportunities were“going to become increasingly rare”, which made her“live in the middle of them every moment.”WhileOne Daywas not a huge hit, it is a film remembered for the performance of Hathaway as Emma Morley.
Anne Hathaway Was Reluctant To Sign On ForLove & Other Drugs
Jake Gyllenhaal revealed that Anne Hathaway was initially alittle reluctant to take on the rolein the film. He shared that Hathaway believed the role was too simple for her. However, theOcean’s 8actress gave some ideas for the part and Edward Zwick, the director ofLove & Other Drugs, happily incorporated them, thus landing her in the role. Gyllenhaal shared (via IndieWire):
“It took her a little while to decide whether she wanted to play the part, because she said the [her] character, the love interest the movie portrayed was too simple for her at first.”
Zwick added:
“It wasn’t fully reading, living and breathing for her and she’s had enough experience to say ‘Well I’m going to give you some ideas and if you’re up for that then I’ll play the part.'”
During an interview withThe Guardian, theHavocstar shared that Maggie in the initial draft of the film wasn’t completely there yet. She found that the character had“amazing potential to be angry, funny, smart and incredibly wounded.”Hathaway shared that combining all those aspects was challenging, but it worked out well in the film.
