Japanese actor and singer Anna Sawai has become the first Asian woman to win the Emmy for Outstanding Actress in a Drama for her role inShōgun. The historical drama had a record win for a single season of 18 Emmys, including Outstanding Drama Series and Lead Actor for Hiroyuki Sanada.

Sawai’s performance as Lady Mariko has been appreciated ever since the FX/Hulu series came out. Apart from the Emmy win, Sawai seemed to have another win when actress Kathy Bates appreciated her performance on the red carpet for the Emmys. The Japanese star got teary-eyed and thanked the legendaryMiseryactress for her compliments.

Earlier this month, Bates had toldThe New York Timesthat she was done with acting and was going to retire afterMatlock. The article mentioned that she was ready to hang up her suit even before the series after a movie deal went sour.
However, the actress now seems to have changed her mind. Speaking toVariety, she said,

My friends say I’ll probably be like Molière and die in my chair on the stage because it really is a life force for me…I can’t believe I’m saying that about doing episodic TV, but this has been so much of a challenge and a delight. Matty is certainly my magic carpet right now, and I want her to go sailing on for quite a long time.
The actress also mentioned that she hoped to play Matlock, which is a revival of the Andy Griffth-starring legal drama, for a long time before retiring.

Shōgunis currently available to stream on Hulu, andMatlockis set to premiere on CBS in October.
