XDefiantis now officially available worldwide, and its lack of skill-based matchmaking is already receiving heavy praise from the first-person shooter community.
It’s a rare occurrence to see a high-profile FPS title launch with no skill-based matchmaking in its casual playlists, but that’s exactly whatUbisoft’s new free-to-play shooter XDefiant has done, and fans are absolutely loving it.

Ubisoft Confirms No ‘Pay-To-Win’ Mechanics In XDefiant
An unsurprising yet welcome confirmation from Ubisoft.
Ubisoft confirmed that XDefiant would have no skill-based matchmakingjust days before the title was due to launch, whilst also confirming that a ranked mode would be released at a later date, for all of the more competitive players looking for more of a challenge.
“We believe that no SBMM is paramount to a fun and varied game experience in the long-term,” Ubisoft said prior to XDefiant’s launch. “Frankly, skill-based matchmaking means every casual game is repetitive- constantly repeating matches that are just as stressful and matched as ranked. We believe casual playlist should be fun and no SBMM is the way to do that.”

With XDefiant launching less than 24 hours ago, players are now getting to experience what it’s like to play a triple-a shooter with no skill-based matchmaking.
XDefiant Fans Are Loving The Lack Of SBMM
Over on X (formerly Twitter), ModernWarzone founder and owner Doug praised XDefiant’s lack of skill-based matchmaking after going an impressive 90-18,saying, “My favorite part of XDefiant was having a good game and not having to worry about my next game being a complete sweat fest because of SBMM.”
But it’s not just Doug praising the game’s lack of skill-based matchmaking. Over on the XDefiant subreddit, one Reddit user said, “Literally my favourite part of the game doing well enjoying myself and not getting punished for it.”

The decision to remove skill-based matchmaking was certainly a controversial one, with a minority of fans believing it was the wrong decision and wouldn’t go down well at launch. But the majority of XDefiant players appear to be loving it.
“I went 40-10 in a match and was surprised I was about to do it again because I wasn’t punished for having a good game. Best game I’ve played in years,“another Reddit user said.
