As a soulslike,Wuchang: Fallen Feathershas a rather substantial cast of bosses to test your mettle against. While themonstrous bossesare quite formidable, thehuman bossesare who you need to be afraid of most.
One of the handful of human bosses you’ll encounter is Liu Wenxiu, the South General of the Rebel Forces against the Ming Empire. With the power of lightning and gunpowder at his disposal, he can zip through the arena with blinding speed, slicing you in two before you can even process what just happened.

Defeating him can be quite tough, sohere is a comprehensive guide on how to go toe to toe in your duel against Liu Wenxiu. We’ll be looking at his attack patterns, how to prepare before the fight, and the best strategies to beat him.
Where To Find South General - Liu Wenxiu
The South General can be found at Mt. Zhenwu,on the right side of Zhenwu Temple, assuming you’re facing the temple itself.
The closest shrine is Zhenwu Antechamber. Make sure the doors have been opened behind the shrine for ease of access. If not, explore Zhenwu Temple a bit more before continuing this guide, andbeware of the Despair enemies that populate this area.

From the shrine, go past the statue and immediately turn right and go through a gate. In the distance, you’ll notice some bird monsters fighting a couple of rebel soldiers. They’ll be too busy fighting each other, so there’s no need to engage them–just let them kill each other and make your way up the stairs and veer to the left.
Keep climbing up the stairs until you reach a set of unassuming doors guarded by two lion statues. There will be a prompt that says “open.” Once activated, you’ll enter a courtyard and trigger the boss fight, or “brave the mist” if you’ve already tried fighting the boss the first time.

Liu Wenxiu has an affinity for lightning and slash attacks, which makes him quite a formidable opponent if you face him unprepared. Make sure you have some Stormward pills on hand to cure theParalysis status effect, which decreases your attack damage.
Ever since the fight againstCommander Honglan,I would recommend facing any human with a longsword, with a focus on Sword Counter as the Discipline, as it will allow you to parry just about any weapon attack. Not only that, but the parry window is incredibly generous.

Since you’re dueling another swordsman, I would recommend thislongsword build, which prioritizes speccing points into the longsword skill tree to reach the “Sword Counter” node and Variant 1 and Variant 2before dumping the remaining points into Strength, Agility, and Weapon Mastery.
Endurance and Vitality are also useful points to spec into, as well as “Steel Resolve,” which gives you a stack ofSkyborn Mighton a successful parry when you have 50% or more Madness.

For my playthrough, I usedLashing Whip as my weapon of choice, but that’s only because it has better stats than Cloudfrost’s Edge, and makes the most out of your Strength and Agility stats.
Focus on usingTemperance needlesthat give you a Strength of Agility boost, along with a Bone Needle that deals any elemental damage of your choosing, though in my experience, you don’t really need Temperance unless you’re worried about not dealing enough damage.
The same goes withBenedictionsandJade Pendants. As highlighted in my build guide, focus on increasing as much physical attack as possible while maintaining survivability through healing and damage reduction.
Because of my playstyle, I opted to mainly use the longsword to focus on parry timing and simple one-two combos more easily.
While this build is more focused on swordplay, spells that you cast on yourself can be rather useful in a one-on-one fight with another human. Support and defensive spells like Divine Might and Divine Ward can ensure that you can hit hard as well as survive Liu Wenxiu’s attacks.
If you’re having trouble reading his attacks and timing your dodges,I would also recommendone of the game’s most overpowered spells:Ethereal Form, which automatically makes you dodge, turns you invisible, and refunds a stack of Skyborn Might when an enemy attacks you. This dodge is essentially the Spell version of the Evasive Maneuver skill, which is intrinsic to the one-handed sword Darkfrost Edge.
you’re able to find Ethereal Form in Zhenwu Temple, on a corpse near the two cannons on the left side of the temple, with Zhenwu Antechamber as the closest shrine.
South General Moveset
The South General has a rather straightforward moveset. He can either use sword combos, unleash lightning bolts, or fire his long gun in his off-hand. His sword moves are telegraphed rather well, so timing your parries is the hard part.
The South General usually initiates the fight by imbuing his sword with lightning beforeswiping to fire a lightning bolt that splits into three directions. He can also cast this same ability three times in a single line. Luckily, the lightning bolts travel in a slow, straight line and are easy to read.
While in melee range, the South General may execute a three-hit combo, which he can infuse with lightning. He’ll also mix in these melee hits byzipping randomly around you twice before striking.
Don’t let your guard down even if you think you’re out of his sword’s range, as he can execute two thrust attacks and can detonate a lightning blast from the tip of his sword.
But when you’re outside his range,he can pull out his rifle and shoot you a maximum of three times.
He can also turn into a storm cloud and dive bomb, casting a line of lightning bolts upon landing.
His most frustrating attack is his dash attack. While the windup is easy to read, it’s easy to incorrectly time your parries and dodges and get hit, which stuns you for a painfully long time.
How To Beat South General - Liu Wenxiu
Everything that you learned from yourprevious fight with Commander Honglanwill be useful in your fight with the South General,as they both have similar behaviors and attacks that can be parried.
Fighting the South General, however, is much more tolerable compared to Honglan, asyou can knock him down on a successful counterattack, giving you ample opportunity to deal extra damage.
Any attack he makes with a physical object, including his sword and gun, can be parried. This should go without saying, butyou cannot parry his lightning bolts.
Like most humanoid enemies, your best strategy is to parry him and knock him down for a few more hits. While you may backstab him for a devastating Obliterate attack, he is highly mobile, which makes it much harder to land a solid hit.
Regardless, your best strategy is to not panic and maintain a good distance; instead of charging at him, make him come to you before parrying his sword attacks.
Ethereal Form is the best spell in the game as it is the perfect panic button should you be under a lot of stress. It only costs one Skyborn Might stack to activate, and for three seconds, you automatically dodge all attacks.
Not only that, but you regain a Skyborn Might stack for each attack dodged, making you infinitely untouchable as long as you reactivate it after dodging.
Much like the Bo Sorcerer, there’s also a tree that you may hide behind if you’re ever under a lot of stress. This can give you some breathing room in case you’re really struggling.
To summarize: It’s best to approach this boss fight like you would inFor HonororSekiro–make your enemy come to you, and parry attacks so that you may unleash a stunning counterattack.
Once you defeat the South General, you’ll receive the following rewards:
