Rocket Mortgage’s 2020 Super Bowl ad showed us the ‘real’ Jason Momoa and fans still find it one of the most memorable ads to come of the event. Momoa tapped into his funny side for this hilarious ad, where fans saw him letting his“guard down”. The ad works best in subverting expectations as viewers would’ve never guessed where the ad was going.

Momoa’s ex-wife Lisa Bonet also appeared alongside theAquamanstar in the ad. It was deemed one of the best commercials for the Super Bowl 2020. Interestingly, a lot of visual effects were seamlessly blended into the ad to make it convincing.
Last year, Momoa once again appeared in a Super Bowl ad for T-Mobile alongside Zach Braff and Donald Faison. Momoa dances to Irene Cara’sFlashdance… What a Feelingand even meetsFlashdanceactress Jennifer Beals in the 2024 ad.

Jason Momoa’s 2020 Super Bowl ad is etched in fans’ memories
Jason Momoa’sRocket Mortgage adin 2020 started off normally, with him driving to his home after what seemed like a shoot. In the voiceover, Momoa asks,“What does home mean to me?”. The paparazzi outside his home can be seen trying to get his attention but he drives past them. As pulls up, he answers his own question,“It’s my sanctuary.”

Jason Momoaenters his home and says a line that almost feels like he is putting out a feel-good message to the viewers. He says,“It’s the one place where I can let my guard down.”He begins to take off his shoes, which happens to be the last normal thing that fans will see in the ad.
In a weird twist, Momoa detaches his buffed arm to reveal thin arms. He reveals,“It’s where I can just kick back and be totally comfortable in my own skin.”Fans watch the hilarious turn of events as Momoa peels off his ripped torso to reveal a thinner body. He tosses aside the fake torso and jumps onto his sofa, where he has one more thing to do to fully let his guard down.

He pulls off his beautiful mane, revealing that he was bald all along. It was an unsettling view for manyAquamanfans but the ad didn’t just stop there. His then-wifeLisa Bonetappears alongside him in what appears to be their personal gym.
He can be seen attempting a bench press with a weightless barbell. Even the barbell seems heavy for the ‘thin’ Momoa and he begs Bonet repeatedly to“take it”. She finally takes the barbell off Momoa’s hands using her single hand, intending to show how weak the ‘real’ Momoa is.

It was a superhit ad at the Super Bowl and Momoa was successful in marketing it even days before the actual event. In anInstagramvideo promoting the ad, he performed some goofball activities like speaking into a pink hairbrush in the bathroom mirror, saying,“But you’ve never seen Jason Momoa like this.”

He is also seen in a bathtub, reading what appears to be a romance novel. He practices saying his name and even repeats his last name, saying,“It’s a fun word to say.”According to Rocket Mortgage (formerly Quicken Loans) CMO Casey Hubris, Momoa fell in love with the idea (via Adweek).
While Momoa may have felt comfortable in the skinny physique, some viewers felt rather strongly about the ad. One X user,@chenstoppable, wrote at the time,“This Jason Momoa Rocket Mortgage commercial is really disturbing please don’t ever show it again.”A fan, who loved the ad, wrote,“So Jason Momoa is in the lead with funniest commercial”(via The Independent).
What went behind Jason Momoa’s famous Super Bowl ad?
In anotherInstagramvideo, Jason Momoa showed exactly what went behind the making of the hit Super Bowl ad. Momoa revealed how his physique was achieved with the help of visual effects and makeup. Casey Hubris shared about the ad,“It takes a hundred people moving in the same direction to bring a campaign and idea like this to life.”

Hubris revealed that their third ad in the Super Bowl took a few days to film at the West Hollywood Hills. He shared that it took months of preparation to bring the ad to the production stage. Alan Scott, the co-owner of Legacy Effects, and David Shane, the director, were also introduced in the video.
He used a skinny double for the scenes where he ripped off his fake arms and torso. However, in the scenes where he showed his face, Momoa had to wear a green screen to add the CGI body. His male pattern baldness was created with a bald cap and a little makeup. He was then given a wig to place over it for the entire shoot.
The VFX supervisor, Jason Bergman, shared that they had to work closely with both Momoa and his double. They both had to make the same movements throughout the ad to achieve each shot. The VFX in the movie came out to be impressive.
Jason Momoa appeared alongside Zach Braff and Donald Faison in the 2024 Super Bowl ad
WhileZach Braffand Donald Faison were regulars in T-Mobile’s Super Bowl ads, they were joined by Jason Momoa inlast year’s ad. While it wasn’t as crazy as his stunt in the Rocket Mortgage ad, Momoa still got to unleash himself in the 2024 ad with some dancing and singing.

It wasn’t as production-heavy as Momoa’s earlier ad as the three actors shot the draft of the ad using a smartphone to pitch the concept to T-Mobiles. Braff toldVariety,“They didn’t have one note. They didn’t tweak a thing.”It was a musical ad, with the actors singing to Irene Cara’sFlashdance… What a Feeling.
Momoa’s step even involved him doing a flip, surprising Braff and Faison. The ad was also graced by the presence of actress Jennifer Beals, who was the lead actress inFlashdance. Appearing in the final shot of the ad, she asks Momoa to dance with his shirt off.
According to Variety, Momoa wanted to shed his dramatic side and venture into comedy, which made him commit to this ad. Before Momoa, Braff and Jaison earlier teamed up with John Travolta for the Super Bowl ad.
