Deadpool & Wolverineis right around the corner, and fans are excited to see Cassandra Nova wreak havoc on the timelines as Deadpool & Wolverine embark on their multiversal adventures. However, there seems to have been a completely different villain who could have been the chief antagonist of the film, and it is one that fans have been obsessed with since the beginning of Phase 4.
/Film reported that Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds revealed that there was another villain who was in the running to be the chief antagonist of Deadpool & Wolverine. This character was not a mutant but had been someone that had been long rumored to be a part of the MCU, with certain sources reporting that Sasha Baron Cohen would be essaying the role in the upcoming Ironheart Disney+ series.
Mephisto almost made his MCU debut inDeadpool & Wolverine
Speaking withCollider, Shawn Levy andRyan Reynoldsrevealed that Mephisto was set to make his appearance in the MCU at one point in Deadpool & Wolverine, and would have served as the main antagonist for the film.
LEVY: What was the name of the villain that we flirted with? Was it Mephisto?
REYNOLDS: Mephisto? Yeah.
LEVY: Oh, that’s who it was. Yeah, we went through a lot of ‘almost’ versions of this story before we landed on… First it was the infamous call from Hugh, but then this idea of Cassandra Nova as sibling to Charles. That was very quickly thereafter, because Cassandra’s link to Professor X creates an interesting dynamic and fascination in Cassandra about you.
Mephisto is a character who has direct links to a slew of other heroes in the Marvel universe, chief among them, Ghost Rider and The Silver Surfer. These characters have already existed in the MCU in some capacity (as cameos or in pre-streaming television shows, such asAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D).
Mephisto is a great villain for an Avengers film
Given that Marvel is reportedly looking for a new multiversal threat to be the fifth Avengers film’s chief antagonist, Mephisto seems very well positioned to be that threat. The character could also be the key to introducing the mainline MCU’s Silver Surfer or a Ghost Rider or two.

Mephistocould also be a subordinate to Kang, which could tieAvengers 5toSecret Wars, where the character could feature as a secondary antagonist yet again. Given that there have already been two Mephisto in a live-action setting (Peter Fonda inGhost Riderand Ciarán Hinds inGhost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance),Avengers 5could introduce one of these versions of the character, and tie it back with Secret Wars.
