Veteran actor Nicolas Cage has always been vocal about his distaste for using AI for movies. The new controversy surrounding Adrien Brody’sThe Brutalist, though, seems to have fueled his fury.

The highly acclaimed movie has recently come under fire for its use of AI to enhance a few elements in it. In light of that, during last Sunday’s Saturn Awards, Cage reiterated his point of not letting AI interfere with the creative process.
According to the actor, the consequences they would have to face if the industry becomes reliant on Artificial Intelligence might be abysmal. Although Nicolas Cage named neither the movie nor the actors, his speech pointing to Brody’s movie was clear enough to see.

Adrien Brody’sThe Brutalistunder fire for using AI
Adrien Brody’sThe Brutalistbecame one of the most successful movies of 2024. Its sweeping victory in the Golden Globes has also been a sight to see. As such, themovie’s frontrunner status in this year’s Oscarshas been cemented as well.
However, trouble brewed when the movie’s editor, Dávid Jancsó, admitted during an interview withRed Shark Newsthat they used AI to enhance a few dialogues and images in the movie. According to the editor, they wanted to be authentic with Brody, and Felicity Jones’ Hungarian dialogues.

As it is quite hard to pronounce, they sought help from a Ukrainian-based software company. According to the report, both actors recorded their voices into the AI tool, along with Jancsó’s own voice to perfect the accent.
Most of their Hungarian dialogue has a part of me talking in there. We were very careful about keeping their performances. It’s mainly just replacing letters here and there.

Moreover, the editor also revealed that they used generative AI to detail a“series of architectural drawings and finished buildings”in László Tóth’s style during the movie’s climax. However, people did not take too kindly to this revelation. Many even called for the movie’s disqualification from the upcoming Academy Awards.

Although Dávid Jancsó defended their stance of using AI toVariety, stating that it is not exactly a new practice, fans are still outraged. Nicolas Cage mentioning the potential harm of using AI in the industry only seems to have added to that fire.
Nicolas Cage criticized the use of AI in movies
Nicolas Cagehas had an eventful 2024. He not only saw the release of multiple of his movies but also earned acclaim for them. In last Sunday’s Saturn Awards, the veteran actor was present for his nominations in the Best Actor category forDream Scenario, and Best Supporting Actor categoryfor his movieLonglegs.
As perVariety, during his acceptance speech for the Best Actor award, he took the time to address his fears about AI making a visible impact in the film industry. Nicolas Cage claimed to be getting more and more disturbed by the use of AI and the potential threat it might cause to the purity of art.

I am a big believer in not letting robots dream for us. Robots cannot reflect the human condition for us. That is a dead end if an actor lets one AI robot manipulate his or her performance even a little bit, an inch will eventually become a mile and all integrity, purity and truth of art will be replaced by financial interests only. We can’t let that happen.
Nicolas Cage further urged his fellow industry mates to,“protect yourselves from AI interfering with your authentic and honest expressions”. As per the outlet, theRenfieldactor had previously shared his concerns in October 2024 as well while talking abouthis upcoming seriesSpider-Man Noir.

At the time, the actor claimed to be terrified of his face and identity being used posthumously if the use of Artificial Intelligence becomes normalized.
God, I hope not AI. I’m terrified of that. I’ve been very vocal about it. … And it makes me wonder, you know, where will the truth of the artists end up? Is it going to be replaced? Is it going to be transmogrified? Where’s the heartbeat going to be?
Neither Adrien Brody nor the Oscars have responded to the criticisms regardingThe Brutalistusing AI yet. It’ll be interesting to see how things unfold as the award ceremony draws nearer.
