TheSolo Levelinganime is one of the biggest sensations in recent times as it has delivered stunning animation and faithful adaptations of the key moments. The anime has a massive following across the globe, and it has been praised by fans and critics alike.

Although the Solo Leveling anime is a massively successful work, the production studio has also made some questionable choices, cutting out certain scenes that make the side characters feel like they have more of a personality and their own backgrounds and strengths.

Of these, one of the biggest and most unfortunate choices made was the treatment of Woo Jinchul, arguably a very important supporting character in the original series. In the webtoons, Woo Jinchul was more than just a support for Jinwoo; he played a vital role in Sung Jinwoo’s rise.

Woo Jinchul’s impact on the webtoons

In the webtoon, Woo Jinchul wasn’t just another government official who was trying to suppress or was keeping an eye on Jinwoo. Instead, he was one of the few who truly wanted the best for the people of his country and the world. He recognized the shift in powerand saw Sung Jinwoo as a powerful seedling.

As the director of the Surveillance Team and a peak-level A-Ranker, he had the duty of monitoring high-level hunters, and from his experience dealing with abnormalities, the moment he first encountered Jinwoo, he knew something was different about him.

While other huntersdismissed Jinwoo as a weakling and good-for-nothing,Jinchul saw his hidden potential.

However, in the anime, his impact has been drastically reduced, making him look like an unimportant side character rather than the strong and dependable figure he was meant to be.

How the anime has nerfed Woo Jinchul’s role

One of his defining characteristics in the manhwa was his intimidating aura which added a sense of flair to his appearances on the panels. Although he wasn’t an S-Rank powerhouse, he carried himself with authority and confidence.

He was respectful of Jinwoo even when he was weaker than him, showing his personality and broad-mindedness. There were many instances in which his aura and power were showcased, lending him a sense of narrative development and fleshing out his character.

Unfortunately, the anime has completely rendered the character of Woo Jinchul as just another insignificant spectator to the greatness of Sung Jinwoo. His character design looks significantly more plain, and his expressions and aura are nowhere to be seen.

Jinwoo’s rise to power is definitely the core of the story, but the anime risks feeling like a two-dimensional story if it keeps ignoring characters like Jinchul. Without him, the story loses one of its strongest narrative anchors.
