Vanillawareco-founder George Kamitani has confirmed that a new untitled project that was initially teased in 2019 is ending development soon. He has called this “one of Vanillaware’s biggest projects”.

Speaking with Nintendoers, translated by Gematsu, Kamitani talks about several aspects of developing games and how long it takes him to write titles. Toward the end of the interview, the interviewer asks Kamitani about what the future of Vanillaware holds, to which he responded with “In March 2019, for reasons I won’t go into, we only sold the prologue to 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, but it included a video of the follow-up title of it. And now, it’s finally finished.”

This follow-up game currently has no known title, but from the teaser, it shows a medieval fantasy setting with a sweeping shot of cavalry that pans down to a single soldier who looks toward the camera. While not much can be taken from this it’s possible that the game could be an RPG or some form of SRPG. It is interesting that the game still has no title yet, but this makes some sense when taking into account that the game still hasn’t been formally announced. Given that the game’s development is ending, there is a strong possibility that the title could be announced and launched within this year.

Kamitani explains that the title is not under his direction but “it’s one of Vanillaware’s biggest productions,” so fans should look forward to it. This hopefully means that this title is going to be something new for Vanillaware while also having the manpower and budget to produce a high-quality title. Kamitani also teases a new project that he will be directing, saying, “Lastly, the title I’m working on right now won’t be finished for several years, but once that big title I’m telling you about is finished, I should get some development staff, so development of my project will come into play”. Kamitani gave no further details, so it’s possible that this project is in its very early stages. In the meantime, Vanillaware will bereleasing GrimGrimoire Once Morein April for PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Switch.
