In case you didn’t know, Sony is cooking up a movie adaptation of the horror game Until Dawn that’s purportedly planned to be released sometime this year. While Until Dawn toes the line between being an interactive movie and a game, that hasn’t deterred Sony from pushing forward with another gaming property they can turn into a film.
Unlike most game-to-movie adaptations, Until Dawn won’t feature the game’s story or characters, though it will be set in the Until Dawn universe.

Interactive horror you could already play with a DualSense controller.
Until Dawn Will Have A Connecting Character, But Not Much Else
At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025 (viaTechRadar), actor Peter Stormare, who will be reprising his role from the games as Dr. Alan J. Hill, confirmed that the Until Dawn film will feature a new plot and a new set of characters. If you hated one particular character in the game, you’ll be glad to know that won’t be an issue in the movie.
If there was ever any doubt about whether the movie would follow the game 1:1 or if it’d deviate from the game’s story, that’s all gone now. While Stormare confirmed the new info in a pre-recorded video, we still don’t know the movie’s plot and how it stays in the same Until Dawn universe.

At its core, Until Dawn is an interactive movie where players choose the fate of the characters and their relationships. Supermassive implemented a butterfly effect where your decision causes ripples in the game’s main story. You can then replay the same section and have two different outcomes that add to the game’s replayability. Of course, these are things you can’t really do in a movie, so it’s interesting how Sony Pictures manages to make this into an Until Dawn movie instead of your usual teenage monster kill-fest.
10 Horror Games That Play Like Slasher Movies
The bloodier the better!
Until Dawn’s story revolves around eight young adults who have to survive on Blackwood Mountain when their lives are threatened after a prank goes bad. There’s a lot of guesswork about who the actual killer(s) is/are, with the outcome varying depending on the choices you make throughout the game. Headlining the game is Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody/Mr. Robot) and Hayden Panettiere (Heroes/Scream), though both actors won’t be in the film in any capacity.
The horror game was initially released on the PS4 in 2015, but it has since gotten a re-release last year as a remake on the PS5 and PC on August 16, 2025. If you’re unsure whether to pick it up or not, I suggest checking gameplay clips to see if this kind of gameplay will engage you since its pace might be too slow for some.

While there’s no sequel announced, the re-release altered the ending and leaves it open for a sequel.
The Until Dawn movie project is but one in Sony’s long line of video game properties that’s being turned into either a movie or a TV series. There’s the super-successful The Last of Us TV show which will haveits second season premiere in April, and Sony has also announced thatHelldivers 2 will have a movie adaptationas well.
