Zack Snyder’s300came out nearly two decades ago, and for many, it continues to be placed among the long list of classics that would unarguably go down as some of the finest in Hollywood’s entertainment industry. Starring Gerard Butler’s iconic performance in the lead alongside a star-studded cast, the project’s final cut was epic and widely commended by fans worldwide.

As much as the onscreen depiction was praiseworthy, the offscreen and behind-the-lens scenes were disastrous. Although surprising it may seem, the truth is that shooting this piece took an “insane” amount of actors getting injured behind the scenes. To say the least, delivering the manliest Spartans in the film was a nightmare, as Butler himself confessed.
Zack Snyder’s300took more than just a bit of blood, sweat, and tears to make
As brutal and gruesome as the epic historical action film byZack Snyderis,300took a lot more thanjust a bitof blood, sweat, and tears from its actors to be made. While the screens saw King Leonidas and Spartans fight against Xerxes and his massive Persian army in the ancient battle of Thermopylae, the offscreen scenes saw a lot of soldiers sustaining wounds in real life.
During a recent interview withPEOPLEfor aComparing Notessegment, actorGerard Butler, who breathed life into the character of Leonidas I for the big screens, confessed the same while sharing how his experience of working on this project wasn’t without its own battle wounds. Recalling how the film co-written and helmed by Snyder was made, the 55-year-old claimed:

I remember every day somebody was getting taken to the hospital. You’d be doing a fight, you turn around, there’s a guy down there, a spear went in his eye. Another time, you turn around, there’s a guy over there who just fell, broke his ankle. I mean, it was insane.
Gerard Butler Felt He Was “Ruining his body” in Zack Snyder’s 300 With Workouts That Were Straight from Hell
Not only does that sound intense, but also incredibly dangerous. For one, ensuring the actors’ safety — especially while working ona project as action-packed and tough to shoot and bring to life as this one— must be the topmost priority of the higher-ups on the sets in the first place, avoiding any such extreme incidents to take place as they did, as Butler claimed.
But it seems like this factor wasn’t paid all that much attention to, considering how even the actors shown as the manliest of Spartans onscreen turned out to be savagely hurt behind the scenes, presumably due to the chaos of it all. That said, it doesn’t quite come as a surprise that the cast of the fan-favorite masterpiece did, in fact, dine in hell, and it wasn’t just onscreen.

That reminds us, Gerard Butler has sustained a lot of injuries over the years
While he didn’t have any details to share about how he himself was injured on the sets of the film, Gerard Butler did revealsome of the many injuries he has sustained throughout his epic career. This includes the time he was makingChasing Mavericks(2012), which had him “getting taken down by a huge set of waves” and “almost drowned,” despite learning how to surf for the flick.
“I thought I was done. They had to take me out, take me to hospital, put me out, give me the defibrillator. I mean, it was intense,” theDen of Thievesstar recalled. Then there was him getting into “car smashes” with James Bond Pierce Brosnan, hitting a wall on a rooftop in a Range Rover at full speed that “destroyed my neck, and it was after300. I was already so beaten up in300.”

Adding to this, he remembered getting hypothermia while filming a day in the Icelandic Sea, besides being “overheat(ed) once in Montreal doing a movie.” If that wasn’t enough,he has even been involved in on-set mishaps with his co-stars, including “scarr(ing) Hilary Swank on the head” while makingP.S. I Love You(2007) and “almost (shooting) Angelina Jolie in the face” duringLara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life(2003).
All of these stunts, of course, have had him being “rushed to hospital” on more than one instance as a result of acting-related injuries that couldn’t be avoided. But even after sustaining so many wounds and so much pain, Gerard Butler wouldn’t be hesitant to do it all over again, considering how he said about his stunt work, “It’s awesome. I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

300 can currently be watched on Prime Video.
