In the run-up to the anime’s second season, also known as Tokyo Revengers: Christmas Showdown, it had been announced thatDisneyhas acquired the rights to the series. As with other titles acquired as part of Disney and Japanese publisher Kodansha expanding their partnership, it was confirmed that Tokyo Revengers would stream exclusively on Disney+ in Japan. While no information about international streaming was confirmed at the time, it has now been revealed that Hulu, which is owned by Disney, will be handling the English streaming of the series.

This streaming situation for Tokyo Revengers mirrors other Disney-related releases from before.Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War was initially announced as streaming on Disney+ internationally, with no indication of its U.S. release until just a week before its airing, when it was confirmed to be streaming through Hulu. Tatami Time Machine Blues, meanwhile, originally aired with international simulcasting streaming through Disney+, before having its whole first season released in the U.S. through Hulu in November. Black Rock Shooter: Dawn Fall followed a similar pattern. The last of Disney’s opening round of anime acquisitions, Summer Time Rendering, remains the only one without any sort of announced or confirmed U.S. release, though it finished its Japanese airing, streaming on Disney+, in September 2022.

That last series aside, it seems Disney is finding a firmer structure for its anime releases at this point, streaming the series on Disney+ internationally, and through its Hulu service in the U.S. Tokyo Revengers, pointedly, is a series about Japanese street gangs known for having large amounts of violent, intense imagery. Regardless, it confirms Disney as an earnest entrant into the cutthroat anime streaming wars, which already includes the likes of Crunchyroll, HiDive, and Netflix.
