Fede Álvarez Reveals HowAlien: RomulusReinvigorates Horror with Classic Practical Effects

Fede Álvarez, the genius behind the spine-chillingAlien: Romulus, has just laid out the gritty details of reviving the legendary horror franchise. You might think bringing the old-school terror ofAlienback would be a piece of cake, especially with Álvarez’s history with practical effects inEvil Dead. But nope, it was far from a stroll in the park.

In a candid sit-down with Collider, Álvarez spilled the tea on the biggest challenge he conquered when filmingAlien: Romulus.Crafting creepy creatures is one thing, but making them truly horrifying on camera, especially with today’s CGI magic, is another challenge entirely. The director revealed:

Alien: Romulus

I knew on day one there was going to be practical effects and what I do right now that’s what I do on Evil Dead, like everyone was doing CG Gore all over and I was like I’ll do practical stuff. I was going to do the old school way and that’s the easy part, but to do it is the hard part.

Álvarez and his team had to make their practical effects so damn convincing that they wouldn’t get swapped out for CGI in post-production, and let’s just say, the director actually nailed it!
