In 2007, the legendaryCrysiswas released and it had game-changing graphics and gameplay for its time. But almost two decades later Crytek’s creation is mostly remembered due to the “Can it run Crysis?” meme. At the time, it was a very valid question because it was so hard to believe that some even believed it was real.

The Nanosuit is now iconic for its innovative mix of futuristic technology with creative gameplay. But the suit’s realism had unintended consequences. The studio’s founder and then-CEO Cevat Yerli revealed in a recent interview that the suit was so convincing, it led to an invitation to speak at a nanotechnology conference.

Crytek cooked so hard with the Nanosuit that people thought it was real

During the development ofCrysis, Crytek wanted to differentiate itself from other first-person shooters. Inspired by games likeHaloandHalf-Life, Yerli wanted players to be able to customize how they played. “This idea of a programmable suit came up,” he explained in an interview withPC Gamer.

The team brainstormed ideas and decided on a programmable suit that would allow players to customize their experience. With inspiration from other first-person shooters, Yerli wondered if they could merge different playstyles into one character. This led to the Nanosuit’s abilities: super strength, speed, and invisibility, all activated at the player’s discretion.

The design process was no small feat. Yerli recalled that the team sifted through hundreds of concept arts, many of which looked like superhero costumes. The breakthrough came with the idea of a muscle suit integrated with nanofibers that synced with the wearer’s movements. Andthe rest is history.

We went through hundreds of concept arts, and they all looked like Marvel. This muscle suit came up, with nanofibres that would then connect with your muscle tissues and sync with your movements.

The game’s marketing team leaned heavily into the Nanosuit’s futuristic appeal. This caught the attention of scientists in the real-world nanotechnology community. Unaware that the suit was purely fictional, they invited Yerli to deliver a keynote speech at a conference. Yerli declined, explaining, “Excuse me, but this is all fake.”

The developers didn’t pull any punches with the graphics

The Nanosuit was justone piece of the ambitious vision. To bring their ideas to life, the studio built a new version of its proprietary CryEngine. This engine introduced groundbreaking features, such as destructible environments, dynamic lighting, and subsurface scattering, which replicated how light interacts with surfaces like leaves and skin.

To perfect the jungle environment, the developers sent a team to Haiti to document real-world forests. Armed with countless photos and videos, the team studied everything from light diffusion through canopies to the translucency of leaves. This attention to detail resulted in visual effects, such as real-time shadows and trees that reacted to environmental changes and player movements.

The developers didn’t stop at environments. Character models in the game featured advanced skin shaders capable of simulating effects like blushing and shadowing within the eyes. Yerli admitted that the team went “over bonkers” with these details, but their obsession paid off.

While the Nanosuit may have been fictional, its impact on gaming and beyond was very real. As we wait for more news onCrysis 4, we can hopefully expect the same greatness again.
