Not many shows will spark as much discussion and controversy as CBS’s2 Broke Girls, a sitcom that danced on the edge of humor and controversy. It follows the lives of two waitresses, Max Black, and Caroline Channing, played by Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs, respectively.

Earlier, it had turned out to be a rating powerhouse for the network and even became a show with many references, establishing itself in pop culture. But its no-holds-barred comedic approach seems to have backfired because the entertainment landscape is constantly evolving and the showrunners couldn’t keep up, so ultimately, it was canceled.
Why Was2 Broke GirlsCanceled?
Having a successful six-season run with millions of loyal followers is no small feat to achieve, but still, the show met its untimely end in 2017. According to CBS, this was solely a business decision. In a conversation withDeadline, Kelly Kahl, the head ofCBS, spoke about the same:
Our comedy development this year was very good, and whenever your comedy development is really good, it puts a lot of pressure on some of your older shows.

They wanted to make room for new content, and it was a smart move, considering that the network did not own the rights to2 Broke Girls, as it was produced by Warner Bros. Television. So even if they did renew it, the financial incentive would be limited.
But the show had also faced severe backlash for its humor that frequently used racial and sexist stereotypes. In comedy, there’s a rule that you always punch up, rather than punching down and picking on the low-hanging fruit. However, theKat Denningsand Beth Behrs starrer,2 Broke Girlsconstantly indulged in Asian caricatures, exaggerated accents, and more such“edgy”humor that is now outdated and tough to sell.

What The Creative Team of2 Broke GirlsHas To Say
The showrunners did not intend for the series to end in six seasons. They seemed to be rather hopeful about the series’ return. Executive producer, Michelle Nader even said “This is not the end for these girls,”which reveals that they still might be hopeful for a season 7 (viaTV Line).
Many plotlines did not see their end, such as Max and Randy’s wedding, and the potential appearance of Max’s mother. But viewers are conflicted, as they feel that the show’s legacy has now become too tainted to revive.

2 Broke Girlsoccupies an interesting space in television history because even though it was loved by many, the humor of the show became outdated, and it did not keep up with the world’s modern trends and evolving values. Even though the show’s creators and cast might be hopeful about their return, and capitalizing on the audience’s nostalgia, they can never outweigh accountability.
