The Officehas some of the most hilarious character dynamics between it’s many quirky characters. While Jim and Pam’s romance could arguably be considered the heart of the show, there were some other romances that were not necessarily the emotional core of The Office, but were still just as important for the comedy that it delivered.

Steve Carrell as Michael Scott

Melora Hardin, the actress who played Michael Scott’s first serious relationship in the show, Jan Levinson-Gould was involved in one such arc. The actress was involved in figuring out the storyline for the character, which involved the narrative choice of having her sleep with Michael Scott.

Melora Hardin felt there was an ‘inappropriate’ spark between Jan and Michael

Speaking withSmashing Interviews Magazine, Melora Hardin revealed what exactly led to the the show’s creator deciding that Michael and Jan needed to hook up. This was not a decision that was made by the writers alone, but with Hardin and Carell consulting. She said:

I think that the whole love affair that happened between Michael and Jan really was spun when Greg Daniels, Steve Carell and I were having lunch during the pilot, and we felt there was this very inappropriate, weird spark between Michael and Jan. We were all like, “You know what? If we get to go to series and actually do this, they should just hook up.” I think we were at a conference or whatever, and it just turned into what it turned into.

Michael Scott and Jan Levinson

The storyline yielded a lot of funny moments between the two characters, forming some of the show’s most hilariously uncomfortable moments, whether it be the scenes in their domestic life, or the ones that play out once they are back in the office.

Jan and Michael might not have been the best for each other, but they were great for the show

Jan and Michael were a couple that fans might have started rooting for initially, but it soon became clear that the duo were not meant to be together. Melora Hardin andSteve Carellwere able to sell the awkward dysfunction between the two characters to perfection, which simultaneously made them an underdog couple and a couple that fans just could not wait to see go their sperate ways.

The Office Almost Redeemed its Worst Mistake With the Best Michael Scott Moment That Was Even Better Than Steve Carrell’s Cameo

The Office, like most sitcoms, defined its comedy with the relationships that its characters had with each other. Be it the rivalry between Dwight and Jim, the way Dwight sucks up to Michael Scott, the romance between Jim and Pam, or the hatred that Scott has for Toby, these relationships can create some hilarious situations, which just add to the popularity of the show.
