Carrie Fisher was one of the pioneering members of the trio that led the originalStar Warstrilogy. Her character Princess Leia was a far cry from the damsel in distress characters that Hollywood usually gave to women. She was the leader of the Rebel Alliance and was hell-bent on bringing down The Empire.

The original trilogy ended withReturn of the Jediin 1983. The actress reprised her role in 2015’sStar Wars: The Force Awakens. In addition to being nervous about playing the beloved character after 30 years, one annoying demand made Fisher furious about Hollywood’s obsession with the perfect lean physique for women.
Carrie Fisher Was Pissed At Being Asked to Lose Weight For Her Return as Princess Leia
Carrie Fisher returned to the Star Wars franchise, 30 years after the release ofReturn of the Jediin 2015’sThe Force Awakens. The actress hadn’t gone back to her beloved role as Princess Leia in a long time and it took some time to get her groove back, as he claimed in the documentary Secrets of The Force Awakens: A Cinematic Journey (viaYahoo).

However, that was not the only hurdle that the actress had to go through in her return to the role. The studio had a rather humiliating request for the actress during her prep for the film. She was asked to lose weight to play Princess Leia again, which enraged her. Fisher criticized this long-standing Hollywood problem which is their obsession with lean physique and women with attractive bodies.
“We had a tumultuous relationship”: Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher Had “Big Arguments” Before Her Untimely Death
In an interview withGood Housekeeping, Fisher bashed the studio for still asking a woman like her, who has aged significantly (she was in her late 50s) compared to the last time she played Princess Leia, to be physically lean and fit. She claimed the business is an appearance-driven one and all they really want is for actresses to magically get younger so that they can still maintain their lean physique. Fisher said,
They don’t want to hire all of me – only about three-quarters. Nothing changes, it’s an appearance-driven thing. I’m in a business where the only thing that matters is weight and appearance. That is so messed up. They might as well say get younger because that’s how easy it is.

Actresses have constantly faced this humiliating problem at least once in their careers. It has been a problematic perception that Hollywood has been maintaining since its inception. Although it is slowly changing, the discourse still exists and one hopes that this fascination with the perfect lean appearance fads away from the industry.

Carrie Fishermade her breakthrough performance as Princess Leia in the firstStar Warsfilm back in 1977. In a new memoir titledThe Friday Afternoon Club: A Family Memoir,Fisher’s best friend Griffin Dunne wrote how the actress criticized every aspect of the film, how her hair was done, and how they were acting on green screens. She was acting alongside Yetis and was shooting at elements that they couldn’t see with ray guns without a trigger. She believed that the movie would be a disaster. The excerpt reads (viaMovieweb),
‘You should see what they did to my hair!’ she had screamed into the phone on location, usually mornings before going to set for her, four in the morning for me. ‘I look like I’m wearing two bagels over my ears.’ She added: ‘And I’m acting with an eight-foot yeti and a four-foot Brit in a rolling trash can! We shoot at sh-t we can’t see on green screens with ray guns that don’t even have a trigger. This movie is going to be a f-cking disaster’.

Fisher would be proven wrong as the film would become a groundbreaking achievement in the sci-fi genre and one of the most celebrated films of all time. Her role in the film would become her most popular one and she would reprise it in several films after that.
