With eight episodes in and one more to go, the second season of Taylor Sheridan’sTulsa Kingis yet to live up to the bar set by its predecessor. Even though the first season wasn’t exactly the most critically acclaimed installment in Sheridan’s filmography, far from it, season 2 on the flip side has taken a notable dive on the writing front.

The mob side of things has especially been a hit or miss, which isn’t exactly thrilling for a show centered around mobs, and the writers have dropped the ball heavily with Neal McDonough‘s Thresher.
Taylor Sheridan’sTulsa KingHasn’t Succeeded in Posing Thresher as a Serious Threat
Although the showrunners didn’t shy away from paintingNeal McDonough‘s Thresher as a serious threat to Dwight’s empire on paper, the show hasn’t succeeded in doing his reputation justice. Moreover, apart from Jackie and his crew, whose rash demeanor doesn’t sit well with the businessman, it seems Thresher doesn’t have a lot of people backing him up, which is odd for a man of his stature.
“Sly spoke to me”: Sylvester Stallone’s Request is Why Garrett Hedlund Said Yes to a “Daunting” Task in Tulsa King Season 2
Despite having several high-ranking officials up his sleeve, on the first sign of trouble, McDonough’s character proceeds to take shelter under Bevilaqua, which further raises the question of how was he able to own Tulsa for so long.
Thresher’s incompetency isn’t the lone hiccup amidst the mob side of things, as despite a potential war on the horizon, there has been a serious lack of muscle, and things are even more dreadful in the New York mob’s case. Even though we’re told to take the Invernizzi family seriously, similar to Thresher, the writers haven’t presented enough material to justify the mob family as a powerhouse, whose main source of business has been bootleg Ozempic.

Sylvester Stallone’s Dwight Remains the Biggest Highlight of the Show
While the second season hasn’t succeeded in impressing its viewer base, the only constant positive that continues to shine amidst the underwhelming storyline has beenSylvester Stallone. This isn’t surprising, as the role allowed the actor to bring his most underrated facet to the table. Not only Stallone has excelled at delivering long witty monologues, but the actor also assisted showrunner Terence Winter in making Dwight more humane.
“He’s remarkable as Dwight Manfredi”: The Last Actor You’d Expect to Praise Sylvester Stallone Has Acknowledged His Might in Tulsa King
Winter recalled (viaTHR):
He knows that character better than I do, in some ways — what Dwight would do or not do. He’s incredibly detail oriented in terms of the scripts. He’ll give me ideas, or embellish things, or say, ‘I would say this a different way.’ You don’t just get an actor with Sly. You get a director, a writer, a producer, an editor
Thresher’s incompetency further highlights the issues within season 2’s writing, and with one more episode to go, things aren’t looking too promising, even though apotential third seasonis well on its way.

Tulsa Kingis available to stream on Paramount Plus.
