The Six Triple EightReview

Major Charity Adams struggles daily to ensure that her Battalion meets the Army’s standards and expectations. The battle outside the platoon is dealing with racism from her fellow officers, who see her as less than because of the color of her skin. No matter how she tries, she can’t overcome the odds to help propel her or her unit. One day, Major Adams is put in charge of having her team march into the war to help solve the backlog of letters not making it to the troops.

It shocks yet doesn’t surprise me that the story of Major Adams and the 6888th Battalion isn’t at the forefront of our history’s storytelling. These ladies, led by the motto “No Mail, low morale,” delivered over four million pieces of mail to the soldiers serving our country.

Tyler Perry has a history of making a wide range of movies, butThe Six Triple Eightis his best script to date. The story is filled with a heavy emotional undertone, yet he finds a balance of comedy and heart like never before. I was always impressed with his ability to juggle the multiple personalities within these ladies and develop these characters so the audience can latch onto their journeys.

Kerry Washington is truly magnificent. There are several moments in the film where she delivers speeches with conviction and passion that feel like they came from her soul. Major Adams was a vital part of our history, and Washington convincingly brings her to life to help us understand her importance. Washington has been doing this for a long time, but this is by far her best work to date.

While Washington thrives, the ensemble cast deserves plenty of credit for carrying the load behind her. Even with Washington at the forefront as Major Adams, she thrives because of the ensemble around her, building her character through each act. With the subject matter, this cast understood how important it was to bring their best amid the extenuating circumstances these characters faced. Ebony Obsidian stands out among the ensemble with her portrayal of Lena Derriecott. Obsidian had many awe-inspiring moments.

Aaron Zigman’s powerful score carries such an emotional impact on the film. It’s easily one of the year’s best. There is a reason that Diane Warren has been nominated for 15 Academy Awards, it’s because she can write incredible music to enrich a movie. Her writing of “The Journey” poignantly puts a bow on the film with the captivating vocals of artist H.E.R. Oscar nomination 16 is on the way.

IsThe Six Triple Eightworth watching?

The Six Triple Eightis one of the year’s biggest surprises. Tyler Perry delivers his best work to date by sharing the inspirational journey of resilience, heart, and passion of the 6888th Battalion. You will be captivated by the story because of the performances by Kerry Washington and the ensemble, but there is an equally important lesson about our history to be learned. If you are the select few that will enjoy this on the big screen, I envy you but add it to your watchlist for those waiting for it to hit Netflix.

The Six Triple Eightis in select theaters now and streaming on Netflix on December 20.
