The Rings of Power introduced us to several new characters while also bringing back some familiar ones. The Lord of the Ringsfans who have gone through the original novel by J. R. R. Tolkien must already be aware of characters likeSauron, Morgoth, and Galadriel. But, the introduction of Adar in the third episode was a surprise for everyone.

The third episode was named after the new character, Adar, which clearly speaks for his importance in the upcoming episodes. Despite getting a blurry debut in the show, he has become a hot topic of discussion among fans. Well, here’s everything we know about Adar so far.

The major reason why Adar grabs everyone’s attention is that he’s not an existing character from J. R. R. Tolkien’s novel. His role is solely created for the TV show. But, despite that, he seems to be equally important as other major characters from the series. Since the start of episode 3, Orcs can be seen mentioning Adar and seem to follow his orders. The mysterious character is the leader of the Orcs, who chant his name when the character appears at the end of the episode after Arondir and other workers fail to escape from the Orcs' slave camp. This is where we see his blurry face, but we are yet to see his entire look in the show.

Adar in Lord of the Rings The Rings of Power

Despite his face not being clear in the new episode, it’s clear that he isn’t an Orc; instead, he very much looks like an elf. According to the Tolkien language created for Lord of the Rings,Adar means “father"in English. So, it’s safe to say that the Orcs not just thought of Adar as their ruler, but they also considered him a father figure. In one of the panels of The Rings of Power trailer, we see a man from behind who is possibly Adar, and there’s an army of Orcs standing in front of him. So, we’ll possibly see him leading the Orcs' army against someone in the first season.

One thing that is sure about Adar is that he is not in a positive role. Some theories suggest that he is the main antagonist of the first season, but that doesn’t necessarily confirm that he is Sauron. In episode 3, Arondir asks Revion why Orcs would address their leader by an elvish name, and the latter explains that Sauron went bydifferent namesin the past, and Adar might be one of them. However, in The Lord of the Rings series, Sauron was known by many names like Mairon, Annatar, Artano, and Gorthaur, but he never went by the name Adar.

Joseph Mawle

So, it’s possible that Adar is an entirely new character who’ll feature an original backstory. He might be an elf who holds a grudge for his own kind and believes in Sauron’s cause. Either that or he is, in fact, Sauron in his TV-exclusive avatar. Sauron’s shape-shifting ability further strengthen the second theory as it has always been one of his major weapons. So, it’s also possible that this time, the Dark Lord has taken the form of an elf to conquer the Middle-Earth.

Who Plays Adar In The Rings Of Power?

Although the creators are quite secretive about everything regarding the show, it is believed that Joseph Mawle is playing the role of Adar in the new series. He is well known for his role as Benjen Stark in the well-known HBO series, Game of Thrones.
