Todd Phillips’Joker: Folie à Deuxhas been one of the most frustrating ‘superhero’ films to have ever come out and for good reason. Although the film can be called a masterpiece from an objective perspective, the way that it tried to tell the story of the Joker is something that simply cannot be excused. The film threw water over everything that the first film created and ended a great legacy in a matter of a few hours.

Joaquin Phoenix in Joker: Folie à Deux

While many would want to coin this as an individual experience for the director, such an ending wasn’t executed for the first time in Joaquin Phoenix’s film. Marvel has made a mistake like this in the past, and if only Phillips had learned from their lesson.

A Betrayal of the Highest Regard

The weight of being a genius can be a heavy one. While some may end up soaring and becoming legends, sometimes one can get crushed under the weight of their minds.Todd Phillipsis as talented as one can get when it comes to being a director. This was perfectly captured in his 2019 film,Joker. However, the same has not been the case for the second installment of the masterpiece.

It is blatantly obvious that the second film was trying to justify its existence through its run time. However, in an attempt to create something as great as before, Phillips ended up betraying the story he was trying to tell. It had everything it needed to be great; two Oscar-winning actors, excellent writers, a magnificent director, and a budget like no other.

Despite this, the film failed each and every one of its trials. However, the final nail in its coffin was the ending scenes of the film. The realization that two full films, which were very heavily anticipated and had fans deeply invested, did not even follow the real Joker.

The twist that a nameless character in the background, with no speaking lines until the very end, was the real Joker, almost seemed like a cruel joke to the fans. However, it rang far too similar to another twist within the world of superheroes. One that was almost as controversial asJoaquin Phoenix’sfilm.

Todd Phillips Should Have Learned From Marvel’s Mistake

Marvel has made its fair share of mistakes over the years. Although the deception with the Mandarin wasn’t as controversial as theShe-Hulkseries, as a whole, there is no denying that it was unnecessary. The Mandarin and the Ten Rings are a very important and dangerous organization in the comics. The bodies that they have buried and the destruction they have caused have made them one of the most threatening organizations in Marvel, as a whole.

With this in mind, it is only natural that fans found it cheap whenIron Man 3reduced the iconic villains to an actor playing a part and Aldrich Killian trying to show off his glow-up. AlthoughShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Ringsdid manage to fix this mistake, it only took the franchise almost a decade to do so.

Misleading the audience to such a high degree did not work in 2013 when Robert Downey Jr’s film first came out, and it has evidently not worked now withJoker 2.
