After Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia’sThePlatformreleased during the pandemic generated significant buzz, the filmmaker along with his team of writers brought back a latest addition to his franchise—The Platform 2. Much like its predecessor (or successor), even this movie left viewers with many unanswered questions. And once again, these particularly shocking events in the narrative sparked significant buzz on Netflix.

Set in a dystopian world where residents in a tower prison fight to survive,The Platform 2follows newcomer Perempuan (Milena Smit) on her journey through the nightmarish vertical prison ruled by dictatorship. While things appear a lot different in the latest movie, the shocking incidents, and cannibalism, followed by a bewildering ending, remain the same. So let’s delve deeper into what happens and how the film ends.
What is Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia’sThe Platform 2About?
Following the events of the 2019 Spanishsci-fi horror movie,The Platform, which blew up in popularity on Netflix, Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia returned with his new addition to the thriller franchise—The Platform 2. Set in the same universe as the first film, followed by the same Vertical Self-Management Center, and similar concept, the new movie chronicles Milena Smit’s character Perempuan.
In the prison holding 333 floors, the captives who live on the uppermost floors are fed first, with food sent further down the tower as time goes on. This means there’s technically enough food for each level, only if people stick to eating the food item they requested before entering the prison. However, the problem is, they don’t. But thankfully, unlike the first film’s dog-eat-dog free-for-all concept,The Platform 2has a strict system to ensure anyone who breaks “the law” is punished.

What Happens to Perempuan at the End ofThe Platform 2?
The more time the film’s protagonist Perempuan spends in prison, the more she learns just how brutal this “law” is. Initially living on Level 24 with lots of food available, Perempuan took part in the law as a Loyalist. But as she gradually began to learn more about the structure, followed by the death of her two cellmates, she fell victim to an arbitrary punishment at the hands of dictatorial leader Dagin Babi and soon began to rail against it.

Instead of staying in the system, Perempuan decided to use the escape plan of her dead cellmate played by Natalia Tena. Her roommate had informed Perempuan about planning to escape by faking her death, during the period where the prisoners were gassed. Tena’s unnamed character believed that she could fake her own death by eating an oil painting. So when the time came, Perempuan followed the very steps after killing Dagin Babi and his supporters.
As she smelled gas, Perempuan swallowed a piece of material that appeared to act like some kind of breathing filter, which choked her unconscious. But after she woke up, she found herself attached to a mass of bodies that were being suspended in the air through anti-gravity. She soon realized that the bodies were being taken to the lowest-most point of the tower, and that’s when she managed to break free before getting discarded.

After hiding herself from the guards, Perempuan noticed how the guards placed a child into one of the beds on floor 333. Adamant about redeeming herself, Perempuan decided to save the sleeping boy by pulling him up through the anti-gravity forcefield. While doing so, she struck her head multiple times causing her to bleed. Right after this, the film delves into a fantastical sequence, where Perempuan and the boy descend further below level 333 and she comes across characters who have died over both films.
The characters then inform Perempuan that only the child can ascend while she has to remain back. This seemingly implied her possible death after hitting her head while trying to save the boy. Further, during the credit sequences, several other characters appear, including Zorion Eguileor’s Trimagasi who was in the first film as Goreng’s (Ivan Massagué) first cellmate.

How is The Platform 2 Connected to the Original Film?
Trimagasi’s appearance as a familiar face inThe Platform 2served as one of the first big twists. InThe PlatformZorion Eguileor’s character was already been imprisoned for nine months, and at one point even told Goreng that he started on level 72, which is where he and Perempuan met inThe Platform 2when she woke up after her previous cellmate is killed by Babi.
Considering this continuity, it’s safe to say thatThe Platform 2isn’t a sequel, but rather a prequel toThe Platform. Based on the timeline Trimagasi gave Goreng in the first film, this means the events of the second film started around a year before those of the original. Perhaps, Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia is setting up his franchise in the exact order as the cells were in the vertical prison.

The PlatformandThe Platform 2are both available to watch on Netflix.
