WhileHBO’s The Last of UsTV series was an instant hi in its first season, it seems the show is already losing steam in just its second season on the network.
The numbers for The Last of Us’s Season 2 finale are out, showing a drastic drop compared to Season 1’s finale.

The Last of Us Season 2 Finale Viewership Down By More Than Half Compared To Season 1
The Last of Us Season 2 finale aired this Sunday, and the season ender saw 3.7 million cross-platform viewers (viaThe Wrap), which is a massive 55% drop compared to the Season 1 finale, which garnered 8.2 million cross-platform viewers. What made this even more impressive for Season 1 is, it aired against the Oscars, which is a huge pull for TV viewers.
However, even with the numbers, HBO remains optimistic. The network expects the Season 2 finale viewership to grow due to low tune-ins on the holiday weekend. Season 2 has tallied about 37 million global viewers per episode.

We won’t discuss spoilers, but I gather that most of the drop is due to the big twist this season regarding one of the main characters. If you didn’t play the game, this would have caught you way off-guard, and perhaps a little bit angry.
Neil Druckmann Reveals Zombie Horror Icon “Hated” The Last Of Us When He First Pitched It In School
In a recent discussion, Neil Druckmann, the creator of The Last Of Us, described the project’s rocky start and its success at Naughty Dog.
While HBO has renewed The Last of Us for Season 3, theshowrunners have said they’ll need at least four seasonsto fully tell the second game’s story. Given each season doesn’t even hit 10 episodes, I can understand where they’re coming from. Of course, if Season 3’s ratings fall even harder than Season 2, it’s a big question whether HBO will renew it for another season. Unless Naughty Dog miraculously releases a third game, expect the TV show’s story to conclude in either Season 3 or Season 4.

Without diving into spoilers too much, Season 3’s story should focus on Abby, who Kaitlyn Dever plays. Unless the showrunners deviate from the game that much, which we doubt will happen.
Please be respectful in the comments and don’t discuss spoilers (especially the season finale).
