In the old days of Hollywood, people of color were often relegated to being cannon fodders in big-budget releases. While things have drastically improved in the last few decades, some projects still bear this issue, and it appears Taylor Sheridan’sTulsa Kingseason 2 might be subject to it.

On top of some poor characterization of certain major characters, especially Jay Will’s Tyson, the penultimate episode also shifts the main threat to the Yakuza and Triad. Moreover, certain aspects of this episode feel reminiscent of the age-old white savior trope.

One of the biggest disappointments in this season has been the character of Tyson, who has proven to be extremely incompetent in the mafia business. Moreover, even though his stupidity got Jimmy killed, for which he was let off the hook pretty easily, in the penultimate episode, he shares zero remorse and is completely high-spirited at Jimmy’s funeral.

On top of him being done dirty by the writers, the Native-American tribes are now rallying behindSylvester Stallone‘s Dwight, as he fills the boot of a traditional white savior.

While there have been some pretty hefty issues withNeal McDonough‘s Thresher, at the very least, he had an aura and some motivation to justify his antagonistic tendencies. But instead of shaping him as the primary threat of this season, the ninth episode backtracks by making the Triads and Yakuka, the only major Asian representation in the show, the main villains with little to no character growth.

Although there’s a good chance that thethird seasonwill be greenlit soon, as the show has continued to excel in numbers, season 2’s writing has been a complete letdown, especially in comparison toTaylor Sheridan‘s other works.

Tulsa KingActor Shares His Stance on a Potential Season 3

When asked about his viewpoint on what direction can a potential third season take, Max Casella, who plays Armand in the show, expressedthat it very much might depend on the final episode. Although he remains uncertain if a third season will see the end of the tunnel, the actor is hopeful that his character might have a redemption arc, especially after the events of this episode.

I couldn’t possibly guess. I didn’t see Season 2 going the way it went. I just hope we get a Season 3… I just hope we get one and I hope Armand has wonderful things to do in that third season. Hopefully not going outside of Dwight’s Circle anymore.

With one more episode to go, it’ll be interesting to see if the show could end on a high note, as the last few episodes haven’t quite matched the standard of Sheridan’s other acclaimed works.
