There were a lot of issues withThe Bearbeing snubbed in the Best Comedy Series category at the Emmys, but the biggest one is why the show was put in the category at all. A show that is beloved for the drama it brings to the lives of its characters, there is a lot of speculation as to why the show was put in the comedy category at all.

Fans have been waiting for an answer, given thatThe Bearlost out toHacksduring the Emmys. There are many who believe thatThe Bearwas in the wrong category all along, and there seems to be a reason why. Despite its focus on the more serious aspects of the restaurant business, the comedy nomination of the show might have more to do with how it’s billed than the actual content of the show.

Why isThe Bearcounted as a comedy show?

As stated byForbes, the Television Academy of Arts and Sciences doesn’t exactly have its own internal definition of what actually qualifies as a comedy. So, the argument for why the show gets treated as part of the genre is sort of circular. The Bear is considered a comedy because its producers bill it as one. Therefore, the category that they want to enter the show in would be comedy.

There have been plenty of other shows that do not feel like comedies but are classified as so, such asOrange is the New BlackandGilmore Girls. While these shows don’t usually allow audiences to have a lot of laughs, there isn’t really a metric for how ‘funny’ the show is for it to be classified as a comedy. Sometimes even sitcoms, that are designed to generate a lot of laughs, end up having some very serious moments, despite them being billed as comedies

Some fans feel that callingThe Beara Drama would have been a disservice to the character

There is a lot of talk about howThe Bearmight actually be having a better time in awards season given that it’s being billed as a comedy instead of a drama. IfThe Bearwere in the Drama category, there are a lot of fans who think that the show would face a lot of stiff competition, such that it would lose out on a slew of awards.

By being in the comedy category,The Bear‘s heavy subject matter gives it an edge over some of its contemporaries, which often deal with more light-hearted subject matter. The Bearis a show that has a lot of fun characters that could definitely be a part of a comedic cast, but thanks to the story and the narrative, find themselves stuck in a drama.
