2024 was a wild year for cinema and this year’s Oscar nominations are proof of it. Despite getting nominated for Best Picture, in a shocking twist bothConclaveandWicked’s directors lost out on the nomination for Best Director. Both films have also received numerous other nominations in technical and acting categories as well.
WhileConclaveactor John Lithgow expressed his disappointment with the snub, he did mention that it was a part and parcel of the awards season and director Edwar Berger would be proud of the rest of the nominations. The papal thrillerConclavereceived rave reviews, especially the performance of the lead cast of Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, andJohn Lithgow. Directed by Edward Berger, who previously made the filmAll Quiet on the Western Front(which won the Best International Feature Oscar among others),Conclavereceived 8 nominations including Best Picture.

While it is odd that a director whose film was nominated for Best Picture was nominated for Best Director, Lithgow’s statement gave the situation the grace it deserved. Other members of the cast and crew ofConclavealso supported Berger for the snub and acknowledged his importance.

She went on to assure fans that Chu might be able to get his dues with the sequel that will be released this year, titledWicked: For Good. Ariana Grande too reportedly expressed her disappointment at the snub and credited Jon. M Chu for helping the rest of the cast and crew to get nominations.
