Martin Scorsese, an acute perfectionist and one of the masters of crime dramas, is very peculiar about choosing actors for his film. His latest film,Killers of the Flower Moon,has an ensemble cast, including his long-time collaboratorsLeonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and, of course,Lily Gladstone. Gladstone managed to win hearts with her acting and was not overshadowed by the stalwarts.
Scorsese wanted an actress for the film who would be the focal point of the film, and he selected Lily Gladstone purely based on his instincts. Leonardo DiCaprio talked about this aspect toVogue,saying,
“There was no reading. Marty just instinctively knew Lily was the one. There was a truthfulness in [her] eyes that he saw even over a computer screen. I’ve never known [Scorsese] meet somebody and then immediately afterwards have this gravitational pull and instinct to say, ‘Let’s not wait another minute.‘”

“What I saw Lily do in “Certain Women” — how she commanded the space and the screen and the emotional impact of what appeared to be minimal and very internal — that’s what I was looking for. We had just started developing the character, and I felt that Lily had it in her. That she would seriously find her.”
