There were quite a couple of revenge plots that occurred inGame of Thrones, and as satisfying as they appeared on the screen, they weren’t as good as how George R.R. Martin crafts his own retribution storylines.
It’s common knowledge that the author and showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss had a falling out towards the latter seasons of the hit fantasy show. As a result, they were left to their own devices, which, as we already know, failed to impress the loyal fanbase.

David Benioffonce said about theRed Wedding scenethat they tried to interpret the books by way of how they perceived the tragedies that happened to the characters. In Martin’s novels, revenge is a dish best served cold. He takes advantage of the delay to make it more fulfilling.
Speaking withEntertainment Weekly, the showrunner said they refused to give the audience satisfying closures when characters die. There were no speeches, no redemptive moments. “You don’t get that here at all… There’s just horror and slaughter,” he said. And then, we see some revenge arcs in the show.
They used this approach in the television adaptation because this is how they thought the story would go. “That’s the feeling we got in the books and that’s what we’re trying to emulate on screen,” Benioff remarked. They made their own creative choices for the show and plotted characters’ deaths and punishments at their own discretion. From this alone, it’s evident that the series was already heading for its doom.

It’s safe to say that what took place in the screen adaptation was not entirely what Martin would have wanted. He’s got his own plans for each character, and no matter how pleasing it was to see Arya Stark slit Walder Frey’s throat, the writers were only cornered with finding solutions for the conflicts of the story. Her killing the mastermind of the Red Wedding was just pure fan service.

Martin despised how the showfailed to resurrectone of the most important characters in the book, and that’s Lady Stoneheart, formerly Catelyn Stark. Since the Red Wedding scene, he considered this the first major deviation of the series from the novels.
