Tony Gilroy helped with the reshoots ofRogue One: A Star Wars Storybefore creating the spin-off series centered on Cassian Andor. The series received a positive response from critics and is slated to return for a second installment. As fans await the release ofAndorseason 2, Gilroy teased what they can expect from the hero’s last outing.

In an interview, Gilroy revealed that the series faltered in one major aspect during its first seasons. Therefore, the showrunner hoped that this issue could be resolved for the second and final installment. However, what Gilroy hopes to achieve with season 2 ofAndormight not be the best idea for the series, and here is why.
Tony Gilroy Reveals One Wrong He Hopes to Right WithAndorSeason 2
Andorfollows the story of the titular thief turned rebel spy, played byDiego Luna. The character was first introduced in 2016’sRogue One, with the solo series serving as his backstory. The series is expected to return for a second season in April 2025, withTony Gilroyresuming his duties as showrunner.
During an interview with the Empire Magazine, Gilroy opened up about what was in store for the second installment, which will conclude the titular hero’s story. At the same time, Gilroy admitted that he was surprised the first season did not appeal to a wider audience.

I was surprised [‘Andor’ season 1] hasn’t translated exactly into widening the audience for people who are ‘Star Wars’-averse. That, it hasn’t done. That’s our goal this time.
Gilroy made the above statement (via/Film), explaining that he had hoped more people would watch and love the series during its first outing.

“My primary responsibility is to the characters”: Tony Gilroy Had No Intention of Making Andor ‘Political’ and That’s What Made it the Best Star Wars Project Without Going Full Woke
While the series received critical acclaim, its viewership numbers were underwhelming despite being widelyhailedas the bestStar Warsproject in years. As a result, Gilroy wanting a larger section of the audience to experience the enthralling saga makes sense to a certain extent.
HavingAndorAppeal to a Wider Audience Might Not be Best For theStar WarsSeries
From Gilroy’s words, it is safe to deduce that the showrunner wants the series to appeal to viewers who are already fans of the space opera franchise but also those who are looking for a good casual watch. The series certainly hasthe right formula to entice casual viewers, having little to no connection to otherStar Warsproperties and its expansive lore.
However, one of the biggest factors that works inAndor‘s favor is how different it is from the other entries in the franchise. Generally, the appeal ofStar Warsfor casual viewers comes from its various staples like lightsaber duels and space battles, which are swapped out inAndorin favor of heartfelt character drama.

“They are going to see a different film”: Diego Luna Promises Andor Season 2 Will Make Fans Re-Evaluate the Best Star Wars Film After George Lucas’ Empire Strikes Back
WhileAndorstill has its fair share of spectacle, it certainly isn’t everyone’s cup of tea despite its brilliant writing andequally impressive performances. It is a small-scale story of an underdog’s fight against the system. Hence, the show greatly benefits from being an underdog in the larger streaming landscape. As a result, fine-tuning the series to have a wider appeal might not be in its best interest.
Andoris streaming on Disney+ with season 2 set to premiere on July 14, 2025.
