Hajime Isayama created a one-of-a-kind series withAttack on Titan. And with the manga came its unique protagonist, Eren, voiced by Yuki Kaji in the anime. But if anything can divideAttack on Titanfans, it’s their view on Eren.

Due to how polarizing his character is, fans have divided themselves between his supporters and dissuaders. From being an innocent boy who sought revenge against the Titans who killed his mother to a genocidal man, Eren’s journey has been intriguing but somewhat removed from reality.
It was Eren’s voice actor who helped Hajime Isayama flesh out the protagonist
Hajime Isayama appeared in a special issue of Brutus magazine in which he talked about his popular series,Attack on Titan. Isayama confessed Eren is a character who he figured out along the way. Creating the protagonist along the way is dangerous, yet Isayama was able to pull it off, with some help.
Hajime Isayama’s One Forgetful Mistake Almost Ruined What Made Eren Such a Well-Written Character in Attack on Titan
The one thing that helped him develop Eren even more is his anime voice, lent byYuki Kaji.
When the manga got adapted into an anime and I got to hear Eren’s voice, that helped me flesh him out, too. I mean, these Titans show up all of a sudden, and he’s not only unafraid, but decides to go kill them? That’s just not a realistic character.

When the anime aired, Yuki Kaji’s effort was visible in Eren’s voice, along with minor details that even Isayama might not have thought of. Beyond the strong words, a weakness could be heard in the voice, which made it sound like he was bluffing. Isayama confessed that even since then,he began to like Eren’s charactermore and more.
Eren always had a goal, but they were so lofty that it bordered on unrealistic. His dreams of revenge and freedom were out of reach of anyone, much less a kid who could barely use weapons properly. But when Yuki Kaji voiced Eren, it was clear that the kid was saying the words out loud, but they might not have his unwavering resolve, even hiding a bit of fear in them.

Isayama createdAttack on Titan‘s Levi for the yaoi fangirls
In the interview, Isayama confessed that he had accidentally created Levi while idly doodling, but as soon as it was finished, he knew he had something. Then, the author unexpectedly confessed that he might have a bit of yaoi fangirl inside him, too. Once he was donecreating the character, an alarm went off inside his head which told him that yaoi fangirls would like this character.
He was also going for a vibe similar to that of Hiei inYu Yu Hakusho, who is a somewhat aloof character. The moment he finished the design, he knew he had struck gold. And that is exactly what happened because fangirls lapped up Levi before anyone could blink.

“It’s okay to have a story where Levi… dies”: Hajime Isayama Wanted to Give the Most Meaningless Death to Your Favorite Attack on Titan Character
His distant personality, coupled with his tough love for his unit and obvious care for Erwin, won over fans. No matter how much of a gore he contributed to on-screen, people just keep cheering him on. Perhaps it is his undeniable popularity that eventuallydeterred Hajime Isayama from killing him off in the finalebecause, no matter what, you should know better than to piss off fujoshi.
Attack on Titanmanga is available to read on Viz Media, and the anime is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
