The Game Awards has become the gaming industry’s equivalent of the Oscars, a stage where innovation, artistry, and impact are celebrated. The 2024 Game Awards concluded with Sony’sAstro Bottaking home the coveted Game of the Year (GOTY). But did it really deserve it over the other nominees?

WhileAstro Botis an amazing, charming, and polished platformer, its win over critically celebrated nominees likeBlack Myth: WukongandFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirthraises questions with a part of the community. It’s a minority but a vocal one that questions the legitimacy of the awards and the biases within its selection process.

Astro Botmade players have genuine fun, but did it innovate?

One glaring issue with The Game Awards is the voting process, which heavily relies on a jury of gaming journalists and media outlets. Fans have argued that this structure often favors mainstream titles and publishers, leading to predictable and, at times, questionable outcomes. As one of the biggest names in the industry, Sony’s titles have frequently dominated the awards.

AstroBot is charming and creative, but it leans more toward a family-friendly platformer. Wukong: Black Myth feels like a step forward in storytelling and action, pushing boundaries with its mythology and cinematic quality it’s a stronger Game of the Year contender to me.

Games likeThe Last of Us Part 2and nowAstro Bot’s win suggest a recurring trend that overlooks innovative indie games and culturally significant projects likeBlack Myth: Wukong.Astro Bot’s charm lies in its playful design and accessibility, making it a hit for younger audiences and families. But its gameplay is relatively simple and it lacks the depth and innovation seen in other nominees.

The stark contrast betweenWukong’spublic reception and its loss at the awards highlights this bias. On launch day,WukongtoppedSteam charts with over 1.4 millionconcurrent players, the highest number for any single-player game release ever. Its integration of Chinese mythology into an engaging narrative introduced global audiences to a unique cultural experience that i

Is it a bias for Sony or just a flawed system?

Streamer Michael “Shroud” Grzesiek stated in August this year whenWukongfirst came out that if it didn’t win GOTY, the awards would be “rigged”. Right after the award ceremony, Shroud immediately tweeted his statement by simply saying “rigged” and many seem to agree with him.

The perception of bias not only tarnishes TGA’s reputation but also risks alienating the very audience it seeks to celebrate. TGA’s selection process has been scrutinized many times in the past for its limited representation of diverse genres and developers. Genres like horror have always been underappreciated, eventhis year withSilent Hill 2remake.

Astro Bot’s win also raises questions about the criteria for GOTY. Historically, The Game Awards have favored big blockbuster games with deep stories, soAstro Bot‘s win is unexpected. WhileWukongdelivered on itsJourney to The Westaesthetic and a sense of discovery unmatched by other nominees,Astro Botrelied on nostalgia and accessibility.

There’s also a chance that the jury for TGA relies on Metacritic scores which further complicates matters. While all nominees have high scores,Black Myth: Wukong’srespectable 81 Metacritic rating could be seen as a disadvantage againstAstro Bot’s 94. ButWukong’slower score stems from its ambition, with some critics noting minor performance issues and a steep learning curve.

All in all, it seems like there is a suspicion of bias for Sony with this year’s TGA results. What would you have picked as your GOTY? Let us know in the comments!
