This week’s issue of Famitsu (officially titled Weekly Famitsu Magazine July 13, 2025 issue) included a brand new interview withFinal Fantasy 7 RemakeDirector Tetsuya Nomura. The magazine released on July 22 this week, with theusual magazine leaksbeing one day earlier as well. As July 23 is a holiday in Japan. Tetsuya Nomura most notably spoke about the next game in theFF7Rproject. Note that this article might contain spoilers.
Tetsuya Nomura knows Square Enix needs to release the sequel as fast as possible, and that’s the plan. Simultaneously, Nomura is also the one deciding whether the game is good enough or not to release and won’t make compromises. He actually wants the sequel to be even better than the first game, and asked fans to wait just a little bit more.
Nomura also said that when the nextFinal Fantasy 7 Remakegame gets announced, he believes Square Enix will be able to make its future plans clear. Hinting that we’ll know at that pointif it’ll be the final gameor if a third game will be coming. Square Enix already started working on the sequel(s)for a long while now.We don’t know exactly when but as early as June 2019 is certain.
Famitsu magazine also polled its readers on themes such as favorite characters and scenes. Commenting on the results, Tetsuya Nomura didn’t imagine Jessie would be this popular in the Remake. Tetsuya Nomura also mentioned the Cloud massage scene and how sticking with “massage” was their only choice to avoid being too sexually suggestive when it comes to Wall Market. Overall they didn’t make the game too sexually suggestive to avoid pushing up the rating. This is so as many people as possible can play it. Nomuraexplained that long ago(that interview which got misinterpreted as “Nooooo Tifa’s boobs got censored baaaaw” by certain Gamers TM).
Lastly, Nomura mentioned in the interview how Cloud could start seeing the Whispers when he first met Aerith. But he can’t tell us yet when Aerith herself started being able to see them. Hinting that it’s spoilers for what comes next.

Personally, my own guess would be the sequel launching early in 2022. I’m pretty sure the game won’t be titled “Final Fantasy 7 RemakePart 2” either and include some kind of subtitle instead. Hence why I always disagreed with the argument of how the title “Final Fantasy 7 Remake” for the first game is misleading or should have included “part 1” because it’s not the “full” story. There are tons of Japanese games who don’t tell their full stories and yet aren’t titled “part 1”, “part 2” etc. But anyway I digress.
Final Fantasy 7 Remakeis available on PS4. The game should beannounced to PCand maybe other platforms when its PS4 exclusivity deal ends in April 2021.
