A limited 10-episode sequel forDexter, titledNew Blood, hit Showtime in 2021. Clyde Phillips, who was the showrunner of both the original and this sequel series, recalled how the discussions for a prequel were born right afterNew Blood‘s script was completed. Chris McCarthy, an executive from Paramount, saw the script and made a comment that led toDexter: OriginalSin.

Phillips shared that McCarthy came in and told them,“You know, I’m a Yellowstone guy. I do prequels not sequels, like 1883 and 1923.”The neo-Western fromTaylor Sheridanwas making waves at the time and these prequel series boasted some pretty big names. Phillips revealed that he had seen all three shows and that he absolutely loved them.

Upon McCarthy’s insistence, Phillips sat down with the writers and began developing a story for a prequel series. Phillips’ new story about Dexter Morgantook fans back to his roots, about how he became a nightmare for bad guys. Phillips shared withDeadline:

As it turns out, I had seen Yellowstone, 1883 and 1923; I just love those shows. So Chris asked if I could come up with a prequel in the next 10 days. I sat with a couple of writers and we found ourselves really excited about the opportunity to go back to the roots and find how Dexter is fated to be who he is.

The prequel series saw Patrick Gibson take on the role of a younger version ofMichael C. Hall‘s character. Hall made a return to the series, playing the inner voice of the titular character. The show also has an impressive cast, including Christian Slater, Molly Brown, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Patrick Dempsey. It turns out that the casting also has a Sheridan connection.

The casting for the series was done by one of the best in the field, a company owned by John Papsidera and Kim Winther. Interestingly, they were also behind bringing many fan-favorite characters from Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe to life.

Despite inspiringDexter: Original Sin, Taylor Sheridan’s prequels didn’t doYellowstonemuch favor

During a recentRedditdiscussion, fans shared their disbelief overYellowstone‘s fall from grace in its final season. They couldn’t blame the entire failure on Kevin Costner’s exit as fans criticized the subpar writing of the show in the fifth season. One user, u/flyonthesewalls, pointed out howParamount may have fed into Taylor Sheridan’s egoand ruined the series.

According to the Redditor, when theWind Riverdirector started the show, he only had enough projects so that he could maintain focus on all of them. AsYellowstonebecame a major success at Paramount, the studio gave him a huge deal and multiple projects, feeding into Sheridan’s ego.

The fan shared that when he found himself creating show after show, he started to sacrifice quality for quantity. They added thatSheridan’s attention probably went to grabbing cash opportunitiesinstead of entertaining his fans. The comment read:

Fans hope that Sheridan starts to focus on the quality of his writing once again. It was his writing on the first few seasons and the prequels, that inspired shows likeDexter: Original Sin.
