Sylvester Stallone’s low point while filmingRambo 3

Despite being considered one of the lower-ranked entries inSylvester Stallone’s movie career,Rambo IIIstill packs a punch with its jaw-dropping action and extreme gore. The stunts were often done by Sly himself, and in this movie, he was completely unhinged.

Years later, in an interview withRoger Ebert, the actor revealed that he was at a mental low point during the movie’s filming. He said:

Sylvester Stallone as John Rambo in Rambo III

I made this picture at such a low ebb of my own emotional fortunes, that I didn’t care if I lived, or died. There was an ambulance standing by at all times. In any of those shots where I’m running toward the camera and the explosions are going off behind me, if the camera panned another two feet, you’d see the ambulance.

Stallone was going through an ugly divorce with Brigitte Nielsen at the time, who he had married in 1985, right after his first separation. The successive failure in romance left a big dent on his emotional health.

Sylvester Stallone doesn’t see Rambo as a violent character

Sylvester Stallone established himself as a down-to-business action star in the 80s as John Rambo, a character whonever hesitated to spill bloodfor a just cause. However, Stallone doesn’t view him as a violent figure. He said:

I”m always taken aback by the way the character is misperceived. He is not a violent character per se. He is constantly questioning his own integrity–and the futility of war. Rambo is never blistering for action–not for war, per se. When he kills in this movie, it’s for reasons like rescuing a helpless urchin from an aggressive sadist.

Whether you see him as violent or not, Stallone’s Rambo inspired a new generation of action stars who walked in his path. And Stallone was able to smile through the clouds of darkness and begin a new life with Jennifer Flavin later on.
