Supernatural Western roguelike The Foglands has been announced as part of Sony’s first State of Play event of 2023. The creepy title is set to launch this year forPSVR2.

The Foglands takes place in a world where toxic fog covers the land, forcing people to scrape and survive underground. The player takes the role of a Runner, a group of hardened survivors who go topside to scavenge for the communities they live in. On their first mission, the player finds everything going terribly wrong and ultimately dies.

But the story of the Runner doesn’t end there, instead, they strike a deal with a mysterious figure, aptly named The Stranger. This being grants the player the ability to loop when they die, granting infinite chances for them to stop a massive beast that killed them the first time, which is also making its way to the player’s home.

Well Told Entertainment is using roguelike elements to create a title that has players constantly engaged. In a PlayStation BlogCOO Derek O’Dell outlines that the team wanted the game to “feel like you’re in a western saloon, and suddenly a bar-fight just broke loose. What do you do? Out of ammo? Look around and find whatever you can. Maybe there’s a bottle or something nearby that you can use to whack an enemy out. Too scary? Sneak past encounters and look around for various equips and abilities to improve your odds”.

The gameplay shown in the trailer paints a picture of frantic action and satisfying melee against hordes of supernatural monsters. Surviving will mean players use cunning and emergent gameplay scenarios to defeat those that stand in their path.

The visuals are a standout element of the title with a varied color palette that has rich, vibrant colors and deep, moody tones. The character models have very thick line work and exaggerated styles, making them look like characters from a graphic novel. The visuals tie the setting together to create a dark pulpy atmosphere that is incredibly unique.

One element hinted at in the trailer but not given a concrete definition is the use of tarot cards by The Stranger. It seems that before each run he may draw cards, which will more than likely grant boons or debuffs depending on the cards drawn. If this system is in the game, as it appears to be hinted at in the blog, it should make every run fresh and challenging.
