Supernatural,a series known for being grim, dark, and, gnarly enjoyed its well-earned fame and acclaim. Starring Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki in the leading roles, the show aired for 15 seasons before concluding in 2020.

The finale episode ofSupernaturalreceived mixed reviews from the world. Building the hype and the intricate story for 15 years, several fans were disappointed at how the ending turned out to be.
The Ending of Sam and Dean Winchester
Although the show had a wholesome end, fans were somehow disappointed with it. Episode 20 of season 15, titledCarry On,is one of the lowest episodes rated on IMDB (6.9/10).
But what was so disappointing about the ending? Well, for starters, Dean Winchester died. While hunting vampires alongside his brother,Jensen Ackles’Dean Winchester is impaled with a spike.

WhileJared Padalecki’sSam Winchester tries to get some medical aid, Dean Winchester makes him stay. The character reveals that he knew how this was going to end and we see Dean Winchester entering the afterlife.
In the afterlife, he is met by Bobby Singer as he drives down the Highway to Heaven on his iconic Impala with a song blasting in the background. We see Sam Winchester carry on with his life and when he dies of natural causes, the two brothers are reunited in the afterlife on a bridge similar to the pilot episode.

Although it was a complete end, fans felt betrayed by the showrunner and the writer of the show. As per the writer Andrew Dabb, the original ending was supposed to be quite grandiose.

Following similar lines, the original ending ofSupernaturalwas similar to the ending that aired. However, there was one small change that could have improved it by a lot.
According to a report byCollider, writer Andrew Dabb stated that the original ending was going to be on an epic scale. The writer revealed that although the ending followed a similar pattern to what was aired, the location and the characters were supposed to be different.

Dean was always going to end up in Heaven, and we were always going to see Sam’s life in fast-forward. But those final moments were supposed to take place somewhere else. When [co-showrunner Robert Singer] and I sat down to talk about Season 15, and our inevitable end, we came up with something that felt like a fitting version of Sam and Dean’s Heaven.
He further continued,

I have to admit that I sometimes think about our original idea — all of Sam and Dean’s family and friends, and one of the greatest rock bands ever on a masterpiece of a set, and I miss it … even though it never really existed.
