The SuperNintendoEntertainment System came out over 30 years ago when the world was a much different place. There were a lot more restrictions on video games as many games that other areas of the world made and America considered improper was not allowed to be shipped and produced in America at the time.

Video games that weren’t able to get shipped to America were often quite strange in terms of game mechanics, the story that surrounded them, or the style that they chose to present themselves. Many of the games presented will fit into the foreign category though there were also games that were made in America with odd artistic tones.
10Ghost Sweeper Mikami
Ghost Sweeper Mikami was an eccentric game that was based on an anime of the same name. The story has gamers play as the protagonist, Raiko Mikami, a greedy exorcist who is given a note about a statue that needs to be retrieved. What makes Mikami interested in it is that a large sum of money would be provided if she were to retrieve this statue.
A lot of the enemy designs the player sees are created in wacky manners. Bosses like the giant rat that is being ridden by a ghost clown stick out as highly memorable. There’s also a part of the game where the player will be riding on the back of a cat making it one of the more interesting and cute SNES levels.

9Zombies Ate My Neighbor
Zombies Ate My Neighborsallows players to choose between playing as the characters Julia or Zeke in single-player or both in the coop mode. The players will have to go out on different missions to try and save people from the monster apocalypse that the game’s main antagonist, Dr. Tongue, started. The player or players need to save a certain amount of NPCs for a door to appear and for them to progress to the next level.
The monster design is fun assome monsterslook like giant green-brain aliens and others appear as giant chainsaw-wielding serial killers.

8Blackthorne
Blackthorneis strange in how it plays as it introduces a cover mechanic that the player uses to hide in the shadows while enemies shoot at them. This game is a mix of learning how to take cover and learning the enemy attack pattern so that the player knows when the right moment to shoot is. It’s a great mechanic in a 2-D shooter that adds a lot of depth to the game.

The game can feel like it struggles with enemy variety but its short run time and settings keep it floating. The player will feel like they are traversing through an increasingly tormented hellscape making it a ride full of intrigue.
7Shadowrun
Shadowrunstarts off oddly and keeps that energy going throughout the game. The players start off at a morgue where they are reincarnated and have amnesia. When they run out of the morgue the scared morgue workers will begin to scream and run around. This makes for a peculiarly funny introduction.
It has point-and-click mechanics and takes place in a messy futuristic world that’s full of enemies that range from humans to ghoulish creatures. The game’s fairly difficult to navigate at times, but it doesn’t take away from a lot of the weirdly enjoyable moments like fighting a dragon-looking monster’s head named Frogtongue.

6Pocky And Rocky 2
Pocky and Rocky 2 is just as weird as the original game. The game has different AI companions that will follow the player around and help them defeat enemies in thesingle-play mode. This is where things start to get bizarre as players will be able to use magic to bump heads with the AI and take control of them.

In multiplayer mode, it has some interesting features in its mechanics. Pocky and Rocky 2 chose to make it so that players could throw the second player at enemies and use them as a bomb projectile. If this is done the second player will be taken out of the game completely for around 10 seconds.
5Rock N Roll Racing
Rock N Roll Racingtakes Mario Kart and puts it in an 8-bit world of rock and roll madness. Players will race 3 other NPCs in single-player mode or 2 others if playing with a friend. The racers have fun designs like Cyberhawk who looks like a copy of Batman but set in the deep future or Rip who looks like he’s wearing the face of a white and green monkey.
The maps are inventive and feature courses like one that looks like a biomechanical work of surrealistic art as the course has red eyes and purple spiked rails.

4E.V.O.: Search For Eden
E.V.O.: Search For Eden was one of the first games that gave players options in choosing how they wanted to evolve in the game. The grinding can feel a little overbearing at times as a lot of the game requires players to eat in order to evolve. The game’s really different as levels present themselves in different eras of time with new features that the player is able to gain on their quest to complete each of them.
There are a lot of different combinations that the player can choose from, and they are allowed to have up to 50 different characters saved to try out different evolved species.

3The King of Demons/ Majyuuou
A lot of games got banned in America because they happened to be too graphic at the time of the SNES’s creation. Majyuuou also known as The King of Demons was one of those games that never got ported to America. The story is easy to follow as it’s about a man trying to rescue his family from Hell. The level and monster design are where parts of the game pop.

Levels have a mix of industrialized areas combined with hellish parasitic growths that feel like the player is traversing through a deep-rooted fear come to life in a 1990s fashion. One of the best parts of the game is the player’s ability to morph into other creatures and fight bosses that look like different demonic entities such as a gray beast with a humanoid face and a worm-like body.
2Rex Ronan: Experimental Surgeon
Rex Ronan: Experimental Surgeon turns the dangers of smoking into an action-packed adventure game where players will have to fight against different diseases caused by tobacco in a tobacco salesman. Initially, the game will have the main character cleaning up the teeth of the salesman then killer robots come into play as big tobacco tries to kill the player.
Levels will go increasingly deeper into the body with one later level taking place in the lungs and another in the brain to clear up nicotine addiction. It’s trying to get people off of the path of smoking but accidentally comes across as hilarious because its absurd story and dry gameplay make it hard to take seriously.
1Boogerman: A Pick And Flick Adventure
Boogerman: A Pick and Flick Adventure feels like a Captain Underpants comic’s sense of humor was turned into a video game. The premise centers around Boogerman accidentally being combined with a giant waste machine that has all the world’s trash and gives him powers. This is where the game mechanics come into play as players can kill enemies by shooting boogers at them or farting on them.
The gameplay revolved around 20 different levels that will have Boogerman defeating enemies in different disgusting worlds. One of the worlds is made up of faces with their mouths open and tongues connecting to one another. It’s a disgusting time with gameplay that isn’t too difficult but a lot of fun to get through.
