Starfieldhas officially won Steam’s Most Innovative Gameplay award for 2023, but even the game’s player base can’t believe it. Bethesda’s latest triple-a release went up against the likes ofRemnant 2, Contraband Police, andShadows Of Doubt, to come out on top.

The Steam awards were voted on by the community, which means (despite the mostly negative reviews on the platform) Starfield’s player base on Steam believes the title deserved the award…or do they? Shortly after the awards were revealed,a postappeared on the Starfield subreddit, simply stating that Starfield had won Steam’s Most Innovative Gameplay award, but many of the replies were dismissive of the award.

New Game Plus is fine and all, but there are other possibilities.

The post has garnered over 2,500 upvotes in less than 24 hours, with a staggering number of comments slating Starfield’s win. “This is gotta be people trolling,” one user said in clear disbelief. Whilst other users pointed out how indie games such as Shadows Of Doubt, which actually featured innovative gameplay, were “robbed” of the award.

According to Steam’s description of the award, Starfield brings a “fresh perspective and brain-breaking surprises” whilst also featuring “newness never played before.” But even fans that have hundreds of hours in-game are blatantly disagreeing with that statement. “I have 100 hours + [in Starfield], the game isn’t innovative, period,” a fellow Starfield player said.

Starfield Isn’t Steam’s Only Controversial Award Winner

Although Starfield appears to be taking the brunt of the outrage, it isn’t the only triple-a title that fans believe didn’t deserve to win an award. In what seems like another troll by the community,Red Dead Redemption 2managed to walk away with the Labor Of Love award…a game that ended support almost 2 years ago.

Steam’s description of the Labor Of Love award states that “this game, to this day, is still getting new content after all these years,” even though Red Dead Redemption 2 is the only game out of all the finalists no longer receiving new content. Runners-up for the award included Apex Legends, Rust, Dota 2, and Deep Rock Galactic.

Bethesda

Back in 2022, Rockstar Games confirmed it would be ending support for Red Dead Online, the multiplayer component for Red Dead Redemption 2. In ablog post, Rockstar said it was “steadily moving more development resources towards the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series,” which wenow know to be Grand Theft Auto VI. The studio then went on to say that it would no longer be “delivering major themed content updates like in previous years.”

Despite the controversy surrounding the aforementioned Steam awards, there were some well-deserved wins, such asBaldur’s Gate 3picking up another Game of The Year award. Check out thefull list of winners over on Steam.

GTA 5 has received versions across three platforms, but Red Dead 2 is yet to get so much as a next-gen update. What’s going on?
