Starfield’supcoming expansion,Shattered Space, featured its announcement trailer in the Xbox Showcase broadcast on August 16, 2025. Despite the game’s mediocre reception among fans and critics, Bethesda will not give up on it anytime soon.

While there was no release date mentioned in the trailer, and it was only confirmed to be coming in 2024, the trailer has confirmed that Bethesda is seemingly pulling all the stops in a Hail Mary pass. While it isn’t known if the upcoming expansion will be enough to save the game’s declining player retention numbers, one thing is sure: it is a glimmer of hope for Xbox fans.
Starfield’s Shattered Space Expansion Looks Murky but in a Good Way
Starfieldwas supposed to be Microsoft’s answer to Sony’s big first party releases, granting Phil Spencer and company the elusive win that they desperately wanted.Because of this premise, the game’s lukewarm reception was a much bigger hit for Spencer’s company than it would have otherwise.

However, one of the fundamental flaws in the game that even fans of Todd Howard’s video game studio complained about was the game’s sloppy writing. And the upcoming expansion looks to be working towards that. The trailer’s ominous opening sequence felt nothing short of a cinematic sci-fi thriller.
Everything from the game’s usual color palette to its environment design and NPCs looked vastly different than what players are used to seeing. It wouldn’t be an understatement to say that the game’s world looked nothing like the lifeless worldStarfieldplayers are used to seeing. It seems like the studio is bridging the gap between Fantasy and Science Fiction with the expansion.

Starfield Players Wanted New Content, So Bethesda Shadow-Dropped It
Along with the expansion’s trailer, it offered the first look into the grim and harrowing world players will witness in the expansion. Towards the end, the studio also confirmed that the base game will get new content in the form of an update going live in the coming hours.

Another complaint that Bethesda has worked on and looks to be remedying soon is the lack of content in the base game. The studio shadow-dropped new content while the showcase was going on.
At the moment of writing, the game is confirmed to be getting new locations, gear, bounties, and custom content for the game, and an update will be dropping in the coming hours. This means that right now is a pretty good time to jump back in the gameif you were one of the 25% of playerswho couldn’t make it past the game’s tutorial section.
