TheStarfieldcommunity is baffled by Bethesda’s decision to scrap an alternative version of the game’s Starmap, which was recently discovered via in-game data files.

The image of this early concept art was discovered by Reddit userredsaltyborger, who discovered the map earlier today. As you can see from the image below, the map is vastly different from the final version seen in-game today. All systems appear to be visible at a glance, as opposed to scrolling endlessly searching for the system/planet you require.

This simple ship design makes space battles a whole lot easier.

Bethesda also appears to have scrapped the idea of including a brief description of each system, which many believe would have further added to the game’s immersion. To the right side of the map, two bars indicate that jumping between systems would have also been far more strategic, as it shows fuel consumption, jump range, and even a “total time” tab.

The latter of those options has led some to believe that jumping between systems would have required the player to wait whilst traveling, but that there was likely the option to sleep in your bed to pass the time whilst you traveled from one system to another.

Finally, there also appear to be drop-down menus at the top right of the map. One of the community’s biggest complaints with Starfield’s current Starmap is that it can be difficult to find the exact system or planet you want. A drop-down menu that shows which planet is in which system would save a whole lot of time.

Starfield Players React To Scrapped Concept

As you can imagine, there appear to be several different benefits from this concept image, so Bethesda’s decision to scrap the Starmap hasn’t sat well with fans. “I kinda prefer the look of this. A lot cleaner UI and you can see everything. On Xbox, I felt like I always had to find a needle in a haystack to find a planet I have already been to,” one Reddit user said.

Others were baffled as to why this concept didn’t make its way into the final product, with one user saying, “they took this out? a grid map with a list? just to make us search each time in the worst way possible? Starfield almost feels like a practical joke at this point.” But not everybody loves this design, with another Starfield fan saying, “The core visual itself looks a bit shit, BUT…There is a dropdown menu, looks to be based on systems and planets. That itself makes the entire thing infinity superior.”

Although it’s unclear why this concept stayed as exactly that, it is clear that there are many features from this design that players are eager to see. Drop-down menus, system descriptions, and a generally cleaner UI would all be very welcome additions.
