Starfieldis a massive RPG and, like many of its kind, has a slew of romance options that you can choose from. All of them have their own charm but among the many eccentric characters you run into in Starfield,Barret is probably one of the more well-written onessince he has the humor and wit that make him lovable.

The romance mechanics in Starfield are a bit obscure, but there are four potential partners that you can romance, one of them being Barret. To romance Barret, you’ll have to put in some extra effort and elbow grease to make him fall in love with you.
Recruit Barret
After you go to save him in the Back to Vectera quest, you’ll see that Barret has actually become well acquainted with his kidnappers, and you can persuade the captain to let him go without paying or attacking. Once you do that,you can then have him as a companionand have him follow you around on your adventures. He’ll help where he can and to boost his affinity, all you have to do is to do things and pick dialogue options he likes.
Barret’s Likes And Dislikes
Barret likes it when you’re essentially being a lawful good player, avoiding stealing, pick pocketing, and other such frivolities that might be seen as an injustice to someone. Whenever you talk to Barret each time his affinity grows, make sure to choose lighthearted dialogue options to further boost your affinity with him.
He will dislike it if you ask about Ervin too soon, his husband who died tragically, but will eventually open up about him as he slowly likes you more. It goes without saying to choose the flirt option whenever it shows up during dialogue with him and keep doubling down on whatever joke he pulls off to boost his affinity.

Breach Of Contract Quest
After this companion quest begins,you’ll have to keep some spare creditssince you’ll be funding Barret’s investigation into his late husband’s death. This is essential if you want to keep him as a romance candidate in the game. After that, you’ll have to travel to Gagarin to meet with a lawyer who’ll inform you of the lack of evidence in regard to Ervin’s case, and you’ll have to collect some evidence. Queue a bunch of locations you’ll visit for the evidence required that will give a clearer picture of Ervin’s case. On your travels, you’ll meet multiple citizens who can be called upon as a witness in court.
When you’re done with that, head over to the lawyer and there will be a trial in a courthouse where you’re able to call upon a witness to testify. Choose Dr. Kaela who seems to be Barret’s choice as well and continue to make lighthearted jokes that appeal to Barret and eventually, once the quest is complete, you’ll finally unlock the Romance option. You will then finally be Barret’s official partner and eventually down the line if you continue to keep him as a companion, you can make a commitment and marry him.
