Yesterday afternoon,Ubisoftrevealed the veryfirst story trailerfor its upcoming open-world adventure gameStar Wars Outlaws. Alongside a new trailer, the studio also confirmed an August 30th release date and the various pre-order bonuses and editions, which are now available for pre-order.

However, shortly after pre-orders for the next big Star Wars game went live, fans quickly took to X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit to express their outrage at not only the pricing, but at the inclusion of a season pass too.

Now these are the droids I’m looking for!

Over the years, season passes have become the go-to way for studios to add extra monetization to games, even if theyalready come with a hefty $70 price tag. While there are plenty of free-to-play games on the market that also offer season passes, such asFortnite,Apex Legends, andCall of Duty: Warzone, a trend has started to emerge where single-player games also offer the same incentives.

Some believe there’s no harm in giving players the option to purchase additional content, but others believe it has no place in the world of single-player games.

Star Wars Outlaws Reignites Season Pass Debate

As we’ve already established, Star Wars Outlaws does indeed come with a season pass. But what’s included? Well, according to theofficial Ubisoft website, players can unlock two additional narrative expansions that will be released after launch, a day one exclusive mission with Jabba, and additional cosmetics for Kay and Nix.

But if you want to get your hands on the season pass, you’re going to need to fork out for the Gold Edition or Ultimate Edition, which will set you back $109.99 and $129.99 USD, respectively.

Whether it’s the price or the inclusion of a season pass, Star Wars fans have had something to say about Outlaws. Over on Reddit,a post on the Star Wars Outlaws subredditgarnered plenty of comments calling out the price, with some calling it “insane.”

“Ubisoft is getting insane with these prices. I remember when their gold/ultimate editions were $90. The $130 pricing for the ultimate edition is the reason I haven’t gotten Frontiers of Pandora. I’ll wait for a sale,“Reddit user SweetPuffDaddy said.

Others opted to remind fellow gamersthat they should never pre-order and “vote with their wallet.“Reddit user Latter_Commerical_52also reminded players why they shouldn’t pre-order big triple-a games, saying, “Remember what has happened with other games preorders and how the games are at launch. Hope that’s not how this will be, but keep it in mind.”

Whether you love it or hate it, season passes likely aren’t going away anytime soon. While the production cost of triple-a games continues to increase, studios will find any means necessary to add extra monetization to their titles. Unless you’re willing to fork out over $100 for the standard edition, don’t expect the season pass model to suddenly disappear.
