One of the most epic plotlines developed in theStar Warsuniverse is that of Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala, the two lovers who suffered at the hands of their tragic fates. While their love story in the prequel film series really served as an interesting arc, things were originally supposed to go differently than the final canon version.

As it turns out, while the final turn of events was supposed to unfold the same way as it did in the final cut of the third prequel flick, i.e.Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, the events preceding it could have been slightly different, nearly meeting the same tragic end as Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen’s romance fromGame of Thronesdid.

Star Wars: Episode IIIalmost had something different play out for Anakin and Padmé

The final cut of the third installment in the prequel film series saw Anakin Skywalker’s fall to the Dark Side after becoming disillusioned with the Grand Republic as he no longer felt the Jedi respected him, and being led to believe by Chancellor Palpatine that the Dark Side couldgive him the power to prevent the love of his life, Padmé Amidala, from dying.

Thus, losing all hope with the Jedis, he aids in their execution before leaving for Mustafar to slaughter the Separatists to tie up any loose ends from Palpatine’s manipulated war. But when Padmé realizes this, she flies down to Mustafar to try reasoning with him, as she still believes in the goodness in him, with Obi-Wan Kenobi following her without her knowing about it.

However, as much as she begged him to change his ways, Anakin had already chosen his path. Plus, when Obi-Wan appeared, he felt Padmé had betrayed him, leading him to lash out at her and choke her with the Force. That’s when Obi-Wan jumped to her defense, which eventually culminated in Anakin’s near death while Padmé gave birth to twins and died of sadness soon after.

Turns out, one of the original pitches for the same had a slight twist to this story. As shared by concept artist Iain McCaig (viaFuturism), instead of making Padmé still be blinded by her feelings for Anakin, this pitch would have seen her realizing that – while she still loved him – her lover had already gone too far and posed a threat to the galaxy and to himself.

Thus, she would have brought a knife to Mustafar to put an end to Anakin once and for all. For the same, she was supposed to embrace him to get close enough to stab him. However, in a twisted turn of events, instead of following this plan, the embrace would have reminded her of the time they spent together, with her eventually finding herself unable to kill him.

This would have followed with the Obi-Wan Kenobi storyline, and the flick would have continued to end the way it ended up. Had they gone forward this route, the pair’s romance arc would have ended on a similar note as that of Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen inGame of Thrones. And, had they chosen this arc, it might as well have helped.

Why this alternate end to Anakin and Padmé’s story could have sat better

While the fact thatit didn’t end up materializingis one thing, this alternate end to Padmé and Anakin’s storyline would have helped in one too many ways as it would have made her a more active character in the lore. This is because, as fans already know, Padmé didn’t have much involvement inRevenge of the Sith, and this arc could have helped with that.

To show that Padmé chose to be more loyal to the Grand Republic than to her lover would have inevitably established a really powerful moment for her. Plus, it would have added another emotional layer to the tragedy by cementing the fact that Padmé had the chance to stop one of the galaxy’s greatest villains, but she could not.

But, then again, it happened the way it was supposed to, and at the end of the day, that’s all that matters.
