Given how much of a phenomenon the firstSquid Gamewas, many felt a sequel was uncalled for. Although a notable portion of the audience presumed that season 2 would be more or less the same, surprisingly, instead of rehashing the already proven formula, the second season is doing its own thing.

While season 2 is only half the story, which is set to continue in the next season, fortunately for the viewers, it is more than just a stepping stone for the potential final chapter, filled with well-rounded characters.

Squid GameSeason 2 doesn’t fall short of the original in terms of characters

Considering that the firstSquid Gamewas a complete package, when the sequel was announced, not many were confident that it’d excel, especially when it came to the chemistry between the main characters. Although the original is still arguably the better season overall, season 2does excel at one front, the characters.

Not onlySeong Gi-hun‘s development as a character from the first season is immaculate to witness, but the chemistry between the main cast is on par if not better than that of the original. From Gi-Hun gaining a new ally in Choi Woo-seok, arguably the best addition to the show, to a more fleshed-out antagonist in Thanos, season 2 double downs in terms of well-rounded players that fans can resonate with.

Moreover, the decision to split the story, while frustrating, allows characters to grow naturally, whether it be the formidable old lady from the Vietnam War, Jang Geum-ja, or Park Sung-hoon, another ally of Gi-Hun. This allowed the writers to incorporate more characters, and in turn, backstories, which pushed fans to root for them.

Squid Game creator is eager to work with one Hollywood star

Being a writer-director, Hwang Dong-hyuk prefers to lean towards Korean productions, which allows him to be at the top of his game. But this isn’t to say Dong-hyuk is against jumping to Hollywood, as he expressed his desire to join forces withJake Gyllenhaalif he“come across an amazing script”(viaCNA Lifestyle).

Of course. I studied film school at the University of Southern California and there are so many people I’d love to work with. I have had those offers since Squid Game, but because I’m a writer-director I think I’m best when I’m working with Korean actors, giving direction in Korean with my Korean script. But, if I come across an amazing script, why not? I’d love to work with Jake Gyllenhaal.

Despite being a worthy addition to theSquid Gameuniverse, the split-season tactic, which has now become the norm for Netflix originals, has left a sour taste in fans’ mouths, and reasonably so. As for now, fans can only wait and hope the potential final season will live up to the bar set by the second season.
