Square Enixhas announced that it will be shutting down Bravely Default: Brilliant Lights in late February 2023. Despite reaching 4 million downloads mere weeks after its initial launch, the mobile RPG based on theBravely Defaultfranchise will close its doors on February 28 and will no longer be playable as of that date.

The publisher did not elaborate as to why it will end service for Bravely Default: Brilliant Light, however, it is likely that the game could not grow in popularity enough for Square Enix to believe in maintaining satisfactory service going forward. The message going over the closurestates that while it has been working hard to keep the game up to date, the company ultimately decided that it would be best to shut down services. However, Square Enix is not done with Bravely Default: Brilliant Light just yet, as it will release an offline version that allows players to experience some parts of the main plot and revisit various characters.

Players will no longer be able to purchase the in-game currency Mythril as of today, but they can use Mythril in their possession until the game is shut down. Bravely Default: Brilliant Light is a spin-off of the popular Bravely Default RPG series which was first released back in January 2022. The gameplay basics work similarly to its inspiration, with all actions in combat requiring units of BP that can be saved for a series of attacks. It tells the story of a group of four heroes called “Warriors of Light” - Sandra, Steel, Claire, and Rufus. Moreover, characters from the Bravely series also make their appearances, including Agnes, Edea, and Ringabel. Not only does the game rely on Gatcha mechanics, but it also features cooperative battles that require characters to work in sync.

Bravely Default: Brilliant Light marks the second mobile game to be shut down by Square Enix in early 2023, as the publisher previously announced it will end services for the free-to-play battle royale gameFinal Fantasy VII: The First Soldier. Although it has only been one year since the two games launched on iOS and Android, they will be scrapped from the mobile division of Square Enix soon.
