WhileSouth of Midnightdoes not have a diverse skill tree,it does offer a few exceptional upgrades that can make a huge difference in the combat.
Whether you are fighting against hordes of Haints or adifficult boss, these upgrades can sometimes be the thin line between survival and death.

South Of Midnight: All Readables Locations
If you are searching for all of the lore pages scattered across Prospero in South of Midnight, this guide is for you.
Therefore, for players still in the initial sections of South of Midnight, I will be highlighting all the best upgrades in the game that you should focus on unlocking first.

This is a ranking for how useful each ability is, and since South of Midnight has a linear skill tree, I will be ignoring the order in which the abilities are supposed to be unlocked.
7Amplified Rend
Attack From Afar With Ease
Amplified Rend is an upgrade for the first ranged attack you unlock in South of Midnight, which actually makes using the charged attack somewhat worth it.
But when you are surrounded by multiple enemies, using this ability is like announcing to all the surrounding Haints that you are vulnerable and open to some free hits.

In higher difficulties, you can’t really afford to get hit, even after getting allhealth filaments, since most normal enemies can mess you up badly.
One instance where I used this ability frequently was during the Two-Toed Tom and Huggin Molly boss fight, since they always seemed to fall a bit far away from me whenever I stunned them.I used the Amplified Rend to target their weakness from afar.A

Unravelling Haints after defeating them with this skill will also unlock the"Going The Distance" achievement.
6Weave Of Life
Free Heals!
I found myself relying on this ability whenever I was near death during Haint encounters.
Aside from stunning the enemy temporarily,it also allows you to restore a bit of your health by performing the Rendering Step, Amplified Attack, Amplifying Rend, and Aerial Rend attacks.

In all honesty, the only time I used the Aerial Rend skill in the entire game was when I wanted to get some extra health after using the Weave of Life ability.
5Close The Loop
Two Birds, One Stone
Probably the most useful passive ability in the entire game, the Close The Loop ability allows you to weave Haints for a short period of time with Strand Blasts.
What makes this ability so useful is how it automatically weaves a Haint upon a perfect dodge, which is already easy to perform in South of Midnight. Once stunned, you can just launch your combo to do some massive damage.
Alongside dodging and stunning the enemy at the same time, this ability also allows you to weave nearby enemies when you finish one off with the finisher.
Close The Loop is easily the best passive ability in the game and should be unlocked as soon as you have enough Floof.
4Fettered Rend
“GET OVER HERE!”
Another one of my personal favorite abilities that I used regularly in fights was the Fettered Rend ability, which inflicts weave with your standard attack after a Strand Pull. The Strand Pull itself lets you pull small enemies toward you or pull yourself toward big enemies.
I found this ability most useful against the Hurlers and Overseers, as they like to keep their distance from you.
South Of Midnight Review
Time to take a trip down the bayou, y’all.
After reducing some of their health, the Fettered Rend allowed me to quickly close the distance, stun them, and drain their health away with my combos before they had the time to do anything else.
3Cleansing Rend
Attack In All Directions
I remember using this ability at least once in every encounter against Haints from the moment I obtained it.
The Cleansing Rend is a powerful AOE attack that deals heavy damage to nearby enemies in all directions. It does have a long recharge time, but that is the only downside to this ability.
It is incredibly useful whenever you find yourself in a corner or surrounded by multiple Haints. You can further upgrade this ability to the Purifying Rend at the end of the skill tree.
This increases its damage to the point that you can almost one-shot weaker enemies in lower difficulties, making it the most damaging ability in South of Midnight.
2All Crouton Upgrades
Your Very Own Sidekick
Your Crouton may look cute, but it is capable enough to bring down Haints faster than you’re able to. After obtaining it in chapter 4, you should make it a priority to unlock all three of its upgrades as quickly as possible.
This includes Crouton Detonation, Crouton Surge, and the Crouton Tangle, all of which enhance your cute companion in different ways.
My favorite way to use Crouton was to have him possess a Hurler, as its projectiles already deal heavy damage.Pair that with the increased damage of the Crouton Surge upgrade, and you got yourself a Haint-killing machine.
Let’s not forget that you can also use your Crouton outside combat sequences to explore rabbit holes in the ground to obtainFloofand reach into small areas that Hazel can’t.
1Bob And Weave
The Standard But Necessary Double Dodge
I would call Bob And Weave the best upgrade in South of Midnight if it wasn’t already the most important and necessary upgrade to unlock in the entire game.
Normally, Hazel can only dodge once every two seconds, but this upgrade allows her to dodge twice in quick succession. Without this ability, I don’t think I could have finished myGrand Weaver difficultyplaythrough.
It makes dodging multiple attacks and traversing around the fighting area much easier, especially in boss fights. It also allows you to hit perfect dodges more frequently, letting you make use of the Close The Loop ability much more often.
Unlocking the Bob And Weave ability should be the top priority for all South of Midnight players.
