There aren’t really a lot of scenes where my character comes home and says, ‘My God, was my day amazing!’ I slink into the house every day like somebody just beat the hell out of me.

Thornton made the above statement, explaining how his character was often required to do the dirty work and wasn’t opposed to getting his hands in the mud.

Billy Bob Thornton’s Tommy Norris ProvesLandmanis Taylor Sheridan’s Most Grounded Show

From Thornton’s words, it is evident that Tommy Norris isn’t your typicalTaylor Sheridanprotagonist. The creator’s shows mostly feature main characters who encompass the ideas of a traditional American hero. However, despite being depicted as working class, these characters rarely find themselves doing the dirty work.

In contrast,Landmanshows Tommy going through the rigorous process of working on an oil rig. At the same time, it also frames his actions in a morally complex manner that cannot be simply defined as good or evil. Similarly, the character might not just come out on top in every conflict and get knocked down a few times, making him a departure from typical Sheridan heroes.
