WithShadow of the Erdtreedrawing ever closer to release, fans ofElden Ringare gearing up for a new adventure with new threats. It’s not just levels and gear one needs to pay attention to. The DLC must be accessed by touching the hand emerging from the cocoon in Mohg’s boss arena.

So the player needs to have beaten the Lord of Blood, but he is not the only one to defeat if you wish to join Miquella in the Land of Shadow.
The Land of Shadows Welcome Only Those Who Free The Stars
It makes sense why the player would need to take down Mohg, even though very few have beaten thisElden Ringboss. Aside from the cocoon being in her arena, lore-wise, Mohg was infatuated with Miquella and would want to stop anyone trying to take him away from his sanctum.
Hidetaka Miyazaki May Have to Rethink as a Summer Game Fest Breakout has Dethroned Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree as June’s Most Wishlisted Souls-Experience
But players must also defeat Starscourge Radahn, who is over in Caelid, munching down on unfortunate souls who step into his arena. To theorize his significance to the DLC, we must understand his history and role in the Lands Between.
Starscourge Radahn Is One Among a Select List of Awe-Inspiring Bosses
Most FromSoftware characters that aren’t outright evil are morally ambiguous at best. There are, however, a select few individuals who are seen as noble and virtuous despite being major bosses that the player must defeat. A few that come to mind are Artorias the Abysswalker, the Burnt Ivory King, and Gehrman.
Elden Ringadded one more name to this list: Starscourge Radahn. Son to Radagon and Queen Rennala and brother to Ranni the Witch and Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy, the Red Lion General is known for his hulking form, immense strength, and mastery over sorcery magic.

His gravity magic is particularly interesting. As a child of Rennala, it makes sense that he is a gifted sorcerer, but his training in gravity magic went beyond even the terrestrial realms of the Lands Between. Radahn’s teacher was an Alabaster Lord, similar to the kind we can find and fight in the open world. This being could have taught Radahn the importance of the stars, and how there are other beings who will inevitably arrive in the Lands Between and could threaten the very existence of the Golden Order.
Radahn initially wanted to learn gravity magic to keep riding his beloved horse, Leonard. However, why he challenged the stars is still a debated topic. Some feel it was because the movement of the stars would affect the fate of the Carian family. Others believe it could be to stop Ranni’s plan to free everyone from the Greater Will. And one theory is that he did it just as a flex. Regardless, Radahn won his war against the stars, if only for some time.

The Events of Shadow of the Erdtree Require the Demise of Radahn
Miquella wished to revive his half-brother Godwyn from his half-death state so he could be put to rest. However, this resurrection ritual necessitated a solar eclipse, a phenomenon that would never occur with Radahn holding back the stars. Hence, we see the epic fight between The Conqueror of the Stars and Malenia, who could have beensent by Miquella himself, likening him to someone who orders assassinations!
Unfortunately for the demigod, Radahn survived the fight and even tanked the Aeonian Bloom! However, even with Scarlet Rot eating away at his body and mind, he is a force to be reckoned with. He continues to hold back the stars until we, the Tarnished, arrive on the battlefield to put him out of his misery.

So, it could be that only by taking out Radahn do we prove our loyalty and adherence to Miquella’s goals. Perhaps the only way to access the Land of Shadow is through the movement of the stars or via Nokstella, the underground city that is opened by the meteor that strikes the Lands Between after Radahn’s death.
One thing is certain, many mysteries in theElden RingDLC need to be answered. Hidetaka Miyazaki has, in classic fashion, given us more questions than answers through the recent trailer and gameplay previews. According to you, why do we need to take out Radahn for the DLC? Let us know in the comments below!
