Adam Scott is currently riding high on the success of the mind-bending sci-fi showSeverance. The actor plays Mark Scout, a manager at the offices of Lumon Industries, who has gone through the severance procedure in the show and is disconnected from his non-work self. The show is streaming on Apple TV+.

While Scott is known for his roles in sitcoms likeParks and Recreation, The Good Place,andBig Little Lies, the actor only became the lead inSeverance. However, he might have gotten the chance a tad bit earlier as he had auditioned for a key role inThe Office. However, he lost the role to one of the most beloved actors in the series.

The US version ofThe Officeran for longer and was far more ridiculous than its UK original but was extremely close to being canceled after the first season. However, what made it work was the casting, with Steve Carell leading the show as Michael Scott doing wonders. However, even the supporting cast was incredibly chosen and went far in making it work.

However, the search for these perfect roles was not easy. It is wild to imagine but Carell was not the first choice for the role and in fact, many of the actors fans have grown to love had multiple, pretty famous contenders. A sign-in sheet for the auditions released by Rainn Wilson revealed that he had auditioned for both Dwight and Michael (viaEW).
The sheet also showsAdam Scott, known for playing Ben inParks and Recreationand is currently leading Apple TV+’s phenomenal showSeverance, auditioning for the role of Jim Halpart. An audition tape released byThe Officeshows Scott reading the introductory lines for Jim. He seems to be more in tune with Martin Freeman’s performance in the original.

However, the casting did not seem to work out but it was for the best as John Krasinski brought his incredible energy to the character and his chemistry with Jenna Fischer was what gave the show its heart. Adam Scott would go on to craft an incredible romance of his own in anotherMichael Schur-created showParks and Recreation.

Scott revealed that he did not have any plan for success when he began pursuing an acting career. He spoke toThe Off-Camera Showand said that he auditioned for multiple roles in films such asI Know What You Did Last SummerandScreambut he was just really bad a auditioning. He said,
I was pretty bad [at auditions] yeah. But, I would be good if the character was supposed to be nervous. So for a long stretch, I would get all these nervous guys.

The actor is credited with guest roles in shows likeER, NYPD Blue, Six Feet Under,and more. His nervous tic was probably why he did not get the role of Jim Halpert either as the character is a lot more confident. Other actors who auditioned for Jim included John Cho.
