Upon its premiere,The Brutalistbecame one of the major frontrunners heading into the Awards season. With a Golden Globe win for Best Picture already under in the bag, the Adrien Brody-led drama is currently one of the biggest favorites to nab this year’s Oscars.

However, the revelation of AI’s involvement in the film has proven to be a turn-off for many, and some are even suggesting that the acclaimed drama should be disqualified from any Awards consideration. This sentiment has seemingly translated to the internet, as some felt Sebastian Stan might’ve been disappointed Brody over the film’s AI drama.
Fans are having a field day with Sebastian Stan’s reaction to Adrien Brody
The editor ofThe Brutalist, Dávid Jancsó, confessed that Generative AI was used to enhanceAdrien BrodyandFelicity Jones‘ Hungarian dialogues, adding that the aim was to preserve the authenticity of their performances. But many viewers didn’t take kindly to this confession, which isn’t surprising given the consensus surrounding AI in the realm of showbiz, which contributed to 2023’s Hollywood strike.
“It worked out for the best”: Sebastian Stan Could Have Made Oscar History With ‘The Brutalist’ But Scheduling Prevented Him
Although director Brady Corbet has come forward in defense of the backlash and its lead actors, this has done little to stop the uproar among netizens. Moreover, inTHR Actors Roundtable, which included several A-listers, including Brody andSebastian Stan, some felt the latter’s apparent disgusted face might’ve had something to do withThe Brutalist‘s AI allegations.
My man’s expression are the subtitles of his feelings

god i love sebastian stan 😭
Oh, so they couldn’t spend time mingling with Hungarians by staying some time in Hungary and used IA?pic.twitter.com/AWMv2MmOSG

Bro was literally begging him to stop talking with his face alone.
But considering the THR Roundtable premiered weeks before the Jancsó’s confession regarding the use of AI to enhance certain Hungarian pronunciation, it’s safe to say Stan’s expression is being overblown.

The Brutalist‘s budget restraints apparently pushed them to use AI
In his interview withRed Shark, editor Dávid Jancsó explained that their decision to incorporate Generative AI for certain Hungarian dialogue boiled down to budget concerns and the language’s difficulty. Being a native Hungarian himself, he shared,“If you’re coming from the Anglo-Saxon world certain sounds can be particularly hard to grasp”.
“Embarrassing” Moment Adrien Brody Realized His Role in Oscar-nominated Epic Was Cut Out After 6 Months of Hard Work – “the greatest loss, creatively”
The tight budget restraint further pushed the post-production crew to lean towards Generative AI, as Jancsó added:
We were very careful about keeping their performances. It’s mainly just replacing letters here and there. You can do this in ProTools yourself, but we had so much dialogue in Hungarian that we really needed to speed up the process otherwise we’d still be in post.

Jancsó further expressed that everyone should have an open discussion regarding AI’s involvement in showbiz, sharing that the conversation about AI shouldn’t be that controversial. Ben Affleck too claimed that the debate surrounding AIhas been blown out of proportion, as he added that AI’s role in showbiz would be confined to imitation instead of creation, as he drew its parallel with craftmanship.
